The Best Makeup for Mature Skin

If there’s a golden rule of beauty writing, it’s probably this: Never lead with Groucho Marx. But as a Gen Xer trying to understand how my peers and elders view makeup at this stage of life, I’ve asked a lot of women to reflect on joining the “mature skin” club. The most common response? Some version of the Marxian classic: “I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member.” Or at least not this one. There is, of course, a branding problem. I defy you to come up with a sorrier euphemism than “mature skin.” Then again, I defy you to come up with a better alternative. Our beauty team tried — and failed dramatically. A short list of the nominees includes “vintage skin,” “seasoned skin,” and “skin that has seen some stuff.” Whatever you call it, this skin — our skin — deserves to look great. And that’s where the finds below come in. They meet dry and textured faces with moisture and slip, forgive imperfection with blendability and translucence, and nudge the dimmer switch back up with just enough glow. Perhaps not surprisingly, some of these products were created by Laura Geller, Danessa Myricks, and Bobbi Brown — all veteran makeup artists who are themselves members of the club.To identify the best makeup for our cohort, I consulted three independent makeup artists, two dermatologists, a cosmetic chemist, and Wirecutter’s beauty experts. I also reevaluated the picks in our existing makeup guides, and had a group of 40- to 87-year-old testers use 57 products over three months. The resulting lineup of 20 standouts includes a hydrating primer, a creamy foundation, a tiny-lash extender, and a lip oil that even the gloss-wary among us have started stockpiling.
