‘I’m a Great Fanatic of Newmarket’: Andre Fabre Discusses Classic Hope My Highness and Returning Heroes Sosie, Sajir and Cualificar

Wait 5 sec.

Ghaiyyath is still awaiting a major winner in Britain and Ireland but he is compiling an interesting record in other parts of the world, including Australia, and to his G1 VRC Derby winner Observer was added Saturday's G2 Tulloch Stakes winner Storm Leopard. Most exciting of Ghaiyyath's second European crop last year was Godolphin's My Highness, who went unbeaten through four starts for Andre Fabre, culminating in an impressive victory in the G2 Sumbe Prix du Calvados last August. Notably, amid a flurry of French Classic entries for the Fabre stable, My Highness is the only one who holds an entry for the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket. The master trainer sensibly will not yet be drawn on whether the filly will make the trip across the Channel. He told TDN, “She's still a bit wintery, although the weather has been good and she is well. She's a very sound and reliable filly.“She is entered in Deauville on 7 April [Prix Imprudence], which was supposed to be a prep race for the Guineas, but I'm still hesitating. I was hoping that the weather would stay a bit warmer but it has suddenly become cold again.”Fabre added of My Highness, who is out of the dual Group 3-winning sprinter-miler Majestic Queen (Kheleyf), “The other option for her is obviously to go to for a prep race in Longchamp – the Prix de la Grotte – and then for the Poule d'Essai [des Pouliches].”Fabre's record at Newmarket is noteworthy indeed: he has won the 2,000 Guineas with Zafonic and Pennekamp and the 1,000 Guineas with Miss France. He has also won the Champion Stakes twice (Tel Quel and Dernier Empereur), Dewhurst Stakes thrice (Zafonic, Pennekamp and Xaar), Middle Park Stakes twice (Zieten and Earthlight) and the July Cup (Soviet Star). When he rocks up with a runner on either side of the Devil's Dyke, it is worth paying attention.  My Highness has Classic entries in France and England | Scoop Dyga “I'm a great fanatic of Newmarket because I think it's the best course in the world,” he said.  “And it's always a good horse who wins there. Longchamp is a bit messy sometimes.“But to have a chance, you have to be good, you know. Anyway, My Highness is the type of filly that could do well. I'm waiting to see – I don't know how good the British fillies are. I know that in Ireland they are very good.”Along with a raft of potentially nice three-year-olds for the season, Fabre has some older friends to rely on for the year ahead, not least the beautifully bred Sosie. The Wertheimers' son of Sea The Stars has returned to training at the age of five after finishing last year on a high with victory in the G1 Hong Kong Vase two years after Junko won the race for the same set of connections.“He's going back to Hong Kong and before that he is going to have a public gallop at Saint-Cloud on the third before he leaves for Hong Kong,” Fabre said of Sosie, who is entered for the G1 FWD QEII Cup on April 26. Also among a list of glittering entries in the race is the three-time QEII Cup winner Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) and Japan Cup runner-up Masquerade Ball (Duramente), who did not take up his engagement in the Dubai Sheema Classic owing to travel concerns over the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region.Sosie's successful 2025 campaign also included wins in the G1 Prix Ganay and G1 Prix d'Ispahan as well as a third-place finish in the Arc. Asked whether he thinks there is still some improvement in the five-year-old, Fabre replied, “Yes, for sure.”He added, “We'll see how things go but he could come [to England] for the King George.”Towards the other end of the distance spectrum, Prince AA Faisal's homebred Sajir ((Make Believe) has also remained in training at five and could bid to add a British Group 1 victory to his win in last season's G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. He had also ventured to Newmarket last spring to win the G3 Abernant Stakes during the Craven meeting and was withdrawn at the start of the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot after getting upset in the stalls. He will begin his 2026 campaign in next week's Listed Prix Cor de Chasse over 1,100m.“Sajir seems to improve very much on straight courses, so he's going to have a race in Deauville on the straight on 7 April and another race before we aim to go to Ascot,” said Fabre. “We were unlucky last year with the problem at the gate, but he's going to stick to those straight courses. He's still in good condition. He should have a good year.”The trainer also spoke favourably of another Godolphin colour-bearer, last year's Prix du Jockey Club runner-up Cualificar. The son of Lope De Vega and the Oaks winner Qualify (Fastnet Rock) won the G2 Qatar Prix Niel before finishing down the field in the Arc.“Cualificar is a major hope for me,” he said. “He was unlucky in the Arc. I had been quite confident. But he has become very strong and has improved a lot physically.“He won't go straight to the Ganay but he will have a prep race in the Prix d'Harcourt [April 5] and then we will see what we're doing with him.” The post ‘I’m a Great Fanatic of Newmarket’: Andre Fabre Discusses Classic Hope My Highness and Returning Heroes Sosie, Sajir and Cualificar appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
