Liverpool given £87m Michael Olise alternative with move for Bayern Munich star ‘unrealistic’

Wait 5 sec.

Liverpool should focus on signing RB Leipzig’s £87million-rated winger Yan Diomande – Michael Olise is not a feasible option. That’s the view of The Athletic’s James Pearce, who has had his say on the Reds’ search to replace Mohamed Salah in the summer.Diomande has impressed at Leipzig since joining from Leganes last summerAFPIt was confirmed last week that the Reds legend would be departing Anfield at the end of the season on a free transfer following nine trophy-laden years. The Merseyside outfit have since been linked with a move to sign Bayern Munich star Olise, who has thrived in Germany since joining from Crystal Palace in 2024.German media suggested that Liverpool would be prepared to offer around £173million for the France international – something Bayern chief Uli Hoeness has shut down. But after Liverpool splashed out £446m last summer – a record amount by a club in a single window – funds may be more scarce this time around.Meanwhile, Liverpool are still hoping play Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz in the same team, with the trio limited to just 88 minutes of action together.Isak joined from Newcastle for a British record £125m – surpassing the £116.5m they spent on Wirtz – while also forking out £79m on Ekitike.Diomande in the roughWith Olise a seemingly unattainable figure, Liverpool could look to make a move for Diomande, who has chipped in with 11 goals and eight assists in 29 games in all competitions since joining from Leganes last summer.talkSPORT reported in February how Liverpool had identified the 19-year-old – dubbed as an immense talent – as a potential replacement for Salah. And we also told you how the nine-cap Ivory Coast international was attracting interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.Speaking on the latest episode of talkSPORT’s Inside Liverpool about Liverpool’s search for a new winger, Pearce said: “In terms of names being that have been bandied around, I just don’t think Michael Olise is realistic.Salah’s imminent exit has led to the Reds to look for a replacementGettyOlise has admirers at Anfield, but Bayern Munich will command a hefty fee for the FrenchmanGetty“When was the last time someone went to Bayern Munich and arguably plucked one of their best players at his peak out?“It just doesn’t happen, it only happens for crazy money and I don’t see that happening.“I think Diomande at Leipzig is probably more realistic and fits the profile more in terms of the type that Liverpool would be looking at.“But I know from speaking to one of our Bundesliga correspondents at The Atheletic, they’re looking at €100million [£87m] minimum – and he’s 19.“So is that value for someone who has clearly got potential, but is far from the finished article?“I don’t think it’s clear yet, the search is on now in terms of reinforcements for the summer.Diomande could be set for a switch to England after just one year in GermanyGetty“And you need to throw into the mix, it will be influenced in terms of what money is available by whether Liverpool are playing Champions League football next season.”Though Pearce suggested that Liverpool are hopeful the attacking trio they brought in last summer will prove to be instrumental in the years to come.He remarked: “There is certainly an element of Liverpool thinking their attack going forward will be built around Isak, Wirtz and Ekitike.“Unbelievably, they’ve [only] played 88 minutes of football together all season.“So when people say, ‘Why have Liverpool have had such a bad season off the back of spending £400million,’ well that’s probably £300million of it right that’s featured together.“It was mentioned to me that they see going forward the option very much of a 4-2-2-2 formation that Slot has played a few times this season, but not many [times as he would like] because the personnel has not been available.Diomande has been directly involved in 16 Bundesliga goals this campaignInside Liverpool on talkSPORTtalkSPORT brings you Liverpool like no other.Stay ahead of every tactical shift, manager sacking and transfer rumour by making talkSPORT’s Inside Liverpool show your weekly go to for all things Reds related.Subscribe now to ensure you never miss a beat of the action one episode at a time, sponsored by BetMGM.Download the app or visit BetMGM.co.uk. 18+gambleaware.org“You would have Isak and Ekitike up top and Wirtz and [Dominik] Szoboskai just behind, so that’s one part of it.“I also think it is nailed on that Liverpool will go and sign a winger and I think there’s maybe this perception that you’re losing a world star in Salah, they are going to have to spend £150million on a new right winger, I don’t think that necessarily tallies.“They are going to have to bring in a winger because anyone who has watched Liverpool regularly this season will know they are crying out for pace in wide areas and you need different ways to play and break teams down.”1: Premier League Fixtures & Results
