King Charles III and Queen Camilla are preparing for a historic diplomatic trip to the United States this April, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Tuesday, March 31. The visit comes at the invitation of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, who will host the King and Queen as part of events celebrating the historic connections and modern bilateral relationship between the U.K. and the U.S.The timing of the trip coincides with the 250th anniversary of American independence during the reign of King George III, an ancestor of Charles.“On advice of His Majesty’s Government, and at the invitation of The President of the United States, The King and Queen will undertake a State Visit to the United States of America,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.It continued, “Their Majesties’ program will celebrate the historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States, marking the 250th anniversary of American Independence.”“The King will then continue to Bermuda to undertake His Majesty’s first Royal Visit as Monarch to a British Overseas Territory,” the statement added.King Charles’ visit will be his first U.S. State Visit as monarch, though he has traveled to the United States 19 times as Prince of Wales, including joint trips with Camilla. Queen Elizabeth undertook four state visits to the U.S. during her reign.The royal couple will also make a stop in Bermuda which will also mark King Charles’ first visit as monarch to a British Overseas Territory.
