An inquest into the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, who died in Toronto in May 2020, has been announced by the Coroner’s Office.Korchinski-Paquet, who is Black and Indigenous, fell from her balcony while police were in her high-rise apartment on May 27, 2020.The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) later found there were no grounds to charge any of the officers involved. The SIU report found Korchinski-Paquet fell to her death while trying to sidestep onto a neighbour’s balcony after she, her brother and her mother each called 911 over an argument that had turned physical.SIU Director Joseph Martino said the officers tried to de-escalate the situation and “though their efforts were unsuccessful,” none of them broke the law.Her family later sued several police officers and the head of Ontario’s police watchdog along with the province’s attorney general, the City of Toronto and the Toronto Community Housing Corporation. The $10 million lawsuit alleged Korchinski-Paquet’s relatives suffered severe emotional distress after they were provided with “misleading information” at the time of her death. The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding her death and a jury may make reccommendations aimed at preventing further deaths. Her death came just days after the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer and sparked protests and calls to defund the Toronto police. Protesters surround a court services vehicle, following the arrest of three individuals, as demonstrators mark the first anniversary of the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, the 29-year-old African Indigenous woman who died in the presence of Toronto police officers, in Toronto on Monday, May 24, 2021.
