A day after the European Union Elections Observation Mission released its final report on the 2025 General and Regional elections in Guyana, the country’s President, Dr Irfaan Ali objected to some aspects of the report but acknowledged other areas where improvements are indeed needed. The President, in a Facebook live broadcast on Wednesday night, welcomed the EU’s findings that the elections were well run and largely peaceful. However, he had qualms with the EU’s position on an “undue advantage of the incumbent,” that is, an advantage President Ali’s People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) had by virtue of being the government at the time. Of particular concern to the President was that the EU flagged government activities conducted after the date for elections had been announced, be it the opening of new roads and schools or the continued distribution of grants.“That is a commitment that a government made in its manifesto from 2020 to 2025, that the incumbent delivered on… and the incumbent has a responsibility, like any other country in the EU. Governments campaign on their delivery [and] on the results,” President Ali said.EU releases final 2025 elections reportThe President also addressed the EU’s recommendation for greater campaign finance oversight. According to him, the government is in the process of modernising laws through an ongoing Constitutional Reform process. So such recommendations are being acted upon already, he pointed out.He also spoke about the voters’ list concerns, noting that there is already a mechanism to remove deceased persons from the voters’ list. What was particularly concerning for President Ali was the limited assessment of the “misuse of social media” by known political operatives. He contended that those operatives were working against the governing party and that their actions should have been scrutinised.Despite his criticisms of some aspects of the report, the President accepted that there are areas for improvement. One such area is the accessibility of polling stations for persons with disabilities.“Part of the new building code is to ensure that all public buildings are equipped to support persons with disabilities,” he said.Beyond his comments on the report, the President expressed much gratitude to the observation mission for their work in Guyana and affirmed that the EU is a crucial partner to Guyana. The post President Ali critical of some aspects of EU’s 2025 elections report appeared first on News Room Guyana.
