Liverpool have conceded at a rate only beaten by winless Wolves since May, with the tally the second-most of any club in Europe’s big five leagues.Arne Slot did not oversee a Liverpool match with more than one goal conceded until late October in his first season in charge. It is already happened eight times in 17 games this campaign. The Reds are leaking goals at an alarming rate, and an astonishing analysis into the malaise from data editor Michael Reid, on his Substack, has put the goals conceded into a wider context.Since the start of May, Liverpool have conceded 36 goals across 22 games in all competitions – an average of 1.6 per game.It is the second-most of any club in Europe’s big-five leagues behind only winless and relegation-threatened Wolves, who have conceded 39 in 18 matches.Liverpool are easy to score against, quite the feat when you consider they have two of the world’s best defensive players in Virgil van Dijk and Alisson!Reid identified fast-break goals, set-plays (corners, throw-ins, etc.), long-range goals and individual errors as the key avenues to goal for the opposition. In the 17 matches so far in 2025/26, Liverpool have conceded first on eight occasions – it took until Boxing Day to reach that tally last season. In the Premier League, Liverpool have lost each of the five games in which they have conceded first, and each of those opening goals came inside the first 30 minutes. As Reid alarmingly points out, conversely, Slot’s side have scored inside the opening 30 minutes of a Premier League game on one occasion, when two were scored against Everton.“Liverpool aren’t hitting teams fast and hard early on in matches, but instead trying to wear them down, draw that press and expose them later on in games,” Reid assesses.“That, clearly, is not working right now. It’s a ploy that, quite simply, needs to be looked at.“Going 1-0 down then puts so much pressure on the attack to produce the goods to get Liverpool out of jail.”So far, Liverpool’s attack has been able to turn the team’s fortunes around just once this season after conceding first, in the 5-1 win at Frankfurt.
