Man Utd need January signings to compete for WSL title after derby defeat – SkinnerShareManchester United were thrashed by Manchester City on Saturday, with Marc Skinner saying the Red Devils need signings to compete in the WSL.Manchester United must recruit in the January transfer window to have any chance of competing for the Women's Super League title. That is the view of head coach Marc Skinner after the Red Devils were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, a result that leaves them already adrift of their title rivals.Rebecca Knaak, Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp scored to help City go four points clear – at least temporarily – of Chelsea at the top of the table, with United another three points back in third.United struggled to match their cross-city rivals as they only mustered 0.9 expected goals (xG) to the hosts' 2.3, leaving Skinner to lament his inability to change the game from the bench. While Skinner does not believe City were clearly superior to his team, he feels United need greater strength in depth to push for a first WSL crown."It wasn't like they dominated us; that's the scary thing. I felt this was a City team where you can get at them, and I'm disappointed we didn't do that today," Skinner told BBC Sport. On possible mid-season transfer activity, Skinner said: "We'll see. I still think you can catch them. I don't see anything exceptional with them. "They're very good in the frontline and can punish anyone, but I think you can catch them. I think we've got to make up a gap. "What we need to do is use the winter window to recruit the people we need to help to support this team."Asked if he already had transfer targets in mind, Skinner added: "For sure, I've got targets all the time. I think we will continue to chip away at them. "Hopefully, we can bring players in who just adapt us slightly. We need adaptation."If I could have brought that in at an earlier point, then I think we could have turned the game around, even at 3-0."While United have suffered back-to-back defeats in the WSL for the first time since May 2024, also going down to Aston Villa last week, they are going well in Europe.United are one of just three teams with a perfect record after three games in the Women's Champions League, and they return to that competition for their next game on Wednesday, against Wolfsburg.West Ham are their next opponents in the WSL on December 7, before they take on Lyon – another team with a 100% record in the Champions League – three days later.Man Utd need January signings to compete for WSL title after derby defeat – SkinnerManchester United were thrashed by Manchester City on Saturday, with Marc Skinner saying the Red Devils need signings to compete in the WSL.Manchester United must recruit in the January transfer window to have any chance of competing for the Women's Super League title.
