(File/ Representative photo)A team from Gandhinagar’s Urban Development Mission (GUDM) on Monday collected material samples from 19 roads in Surat to address regular complaints of roads being frequently damaged. The team was assisted by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials.ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW VIDEODuring the monsoons, the city’s roads were severely damaged as a result of which the risk of road accidents peaked.A few days ago, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had directed GUDM officials to visit all the municipal corporations of the state – except Ahmedabad – to assess the road conditions and collect samples from damaged roads.Sources said SMC had provided a list of 20 damaged roads to GUDM, including information on when they were re-carpeted, when they were constructed, and the materials used. The team also conducted independent verifications and visited 20 different locations across all nine zones.Apart from the main roads, samples were also collected from internal street roads. Details of each road – including the names of contractors – were also recorded.Surat Municipal Corporation City Engineer, Jatin Desai, said, “The teams had collected samples of 19 damaged roads in the city and also took details of the ‘Defect liability Period’ of the contractor. The materials will be tested in the government laboratories and later the team will prepare a report and send it to the Chief Minister.
