Zack Snyder Says There’s “More To Come” From Ben Affleck’s Batman, While DCU’s Future Remains Uncertain

Recently, director Zack Snyder excited DC fans when he shared a picture of Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel on his Instagram, beneath the caption: “Henry Cavill is Superman”.While it seems the filmmaker was showing off his photography skills via his newly launched social media account, the picture was followed by more, and not just of Cavill, but of Joe Manganiello as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke and Jared Leto as Joker/Mr J (as they were both seen in Snyder’s 2021 film Justice League), as well as Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman.Discourse among DC fans quickly erupted as a result, with many defending the DC Extended Universe — the home of Snyder’s films, Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2021) — and others swinging the bat for the newly established DC Universe, which falls under James Gunn and Peter Safran. The latter launched this year with Superman (2025), which stars David Corenswet. But so far, the DCU has failed to ignite any meaningful excitement among the majority of fans.Credit: DC StudiosRelated: Robert Pattinson’s ‘The Batman’ Sequel Officially Canceled, James Gunn ConfirmsWhile Superman enjoyed a decent run at the box office, grossing $616.7M worldwide against its $225M budget, many criticized the film for its overly comedic tone, courtesy of director James Gunn, who previously helmed other wacky superhero movies such as the DCEU’s The Suicide Squad (2021) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The DCU is also suffering from issues regarding canon and storytelling, with Gunn admittedly cherry-picking content and characters from the now-defunct DCEU, a move that’s at odds with the promise of this new shared cinematic universe wiping the slate clean.Credit: Inside the MagicThis has led to many fans campaigning for the return of the previous continuity — not the wider DCEU, which includes other films such as Wonder Woman (2017) and The Flash (2023) — but specifically, the “Snyderverse”, which consists of the director’s three films.Whether or not that will ever happen remains to be seen, but this all comes amid reports that that Warner Bros. Discovery is receiving unsolicited acquisition offers from third parties (per Variety), which has led many fans to speculate that Gunn and Safran could soon be out, and with them, the new DCU. But either way, Snyder continues to stoke the flames — whether intentionally or not — and has now shared another image of Ben Affleck as the Dark Knight, this time promising that he’s “just getting started” and that there’s “more to come”.“Thank you for 300,000 followers. It’s been a fun six weeks on here, and I’m just getting started. Shot this on my Leica Monochrom with a 50mm—more to come.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by zack snyder (@zacksnyder)Related: James Gunn’s Superman Removed Amid Rumors of Henry Cavill’s Return, Warner Bros. Gives UpdateOf course, Snyder is more than likely still referring to his extensive superhero photography collection. But on the other hand, he’s a filmmaker who’s hardly out of touch with the fans. Could he be teasing the return of Snyderverse return in some form, perhaps via streaming? As unlikely as it seems, no one could have predicted that the director would return to essentially reboot Justice League following the 2017 version of the film, which he was forced to abandon at the time due to a personal tragedy. But that’s exactly what happened, and it all started with the online campaign #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, which was spearheaded by fans.2017’s Justice League was completed by Joss Whedon (Avengers: Age of Ultron), but was lambasted by fans and critics upon theatrical release. Four years later, Zack Snyder repurposed the film with previously unused and new footage. It was released on HBO Max to positive reviews and became one of the most-streamed films on the platform that year.Credit: DC / Warner Bros.Meanwhile, Snyder also recently celebrated Cavill’s win over the latest Superman movie, comparing the superior box office success of Man of Steel to Gunn’s reboot. But will Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck return as their respective DC heroes, or have they had their time? For now, David Corenswet is Superman, while Gunn and Safran continue their search for the next actor to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming DCU film The Brave and the Bold (TBA). There’s no release date for that film, however, director Andy Muschietti (The Flash) recently shared an update with Variety about when he can start talking about it.What are your thoughts on all of this?
