Reddy, consultant physician, diabetologist and critical care specialist, Gleneagles Hospital, Lakdi ka Pul, Hyderabad.A November 2024 study published in Research Gate investigated the differences due to a change in tongue position during isokinetic knee flexions and extensions. It showed significant differences in force development — of up to 30 per cent. The study noted that the researchers attributed this to a connection between the tongue position and the central nervous system but emphasised that further studies are required to verify this hypothesis. When the tongue rests naturally against the roof of the mouth, it helps maintain “proper craniofacial alignment and supports optimal posture.” “Poor tongue positioning, such as allowing it to rest on the floor of the mouth, can lead to forward head posture and neck muscle strain. These imbalances can affect the body’s ability to generate maximum strength during physical activities,” said Dr Reddy. Are you lifting right?
