The untitled James Bond film, which will be the 25th Eon film and the 26th overall, is officially happening. Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024) director Denis Villeneuve will helm the upcoming reboot, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight attached as writer. But despite a lot of coverage lately, the hunt for the next 007 actor hasn’t even started yet — that’s not expected to happen until Villeneuve wraps filming on Dune: Part Three next year.So we’ve a while yet before Amazon MGM declassifies Bond’s new identity. Whoever it ends up being will follow in the footsteps of six 007 actors across 26 films: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and, most recently, Daniel Craig.Credit: MGM/EON ProductionsBut meanwhile, a new actor has been cast as the iconic MI6 secret agent in another medium: Irish actor Patrick Gibson (Dexter: Original Sin) has picked up the Walther PPK for the third-person action-adventure video game “007 First Light” from developers IO Interactive. While the game has been in the works for a few years, previously going under the working title “Project 007”, it wasn’t officially revealed until the first trailer dropped earlier this year. Since then, we’ve seen extended gameplay overviews and behind-the-scenes featurettes.Watch the official trailer for “007 First Light” below and see Gibson in action as Bond:IO Interactive has confirmed that the game won’t be connected to any existing content or Amazon MGM’s film reboot, instead operating in its own standalone continuity similar to the different “eras” within the long-running film franchise, whether it’s Connery or Craig. But it’s worth noting that Gibson, 30, is one of the youngest Bond actors, which means he could be in it for the long haul, returning for sequels down the line.Credit: IO Interactive under license from Amazon MGM Studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Eon ProductionsRelated: New James Bond Breaks Silence on Landing 007 Role in Upcoming RebootThis will likely be the case, not only because the developer is currently best known for the Hitman series, but in an interview with IGN last year, before “007 First Light” was officially unveiled, IO Interactive boss Hakan Abrak said that there are hopes for the game to launch a “big trilogy”, with a James Bond that can be “built from the ground up for gamers,” one they can “call their own and grow with” throughout the course of more entries within the series. He also said that the new 007 game series could grow alongside the next era of films from Amazon MGM: “I just hope we’ll do a thing that will define James Bond in gaming for years to come,” adding, “And that is not only one game, but that we create a universe for gamers to own for many years to come that we can grow with that next to the Bond on the movies.”It seems the film reboot is taking a similar approach to creating a new 007 for the long term, as the studio and filmmakers are reportedly eyeing an actor in their late 20s or early 30s.Credit: IO Interactive under license from Amazon MGM Studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Eon Productions“007 First Light is “a thrilling narrative action-adventure game developed and published by IO Interactive,” the official website’s synopsis reads. “Follow James Bond as a young, resourceful, and sometimes reckless recruit in MI6’s training program, and discover an origin story of the world’s most famous spy.”The game also stars Lennie James as Bond’s mentor Greenway, Priyanga Burford as Chief of Intelligence M, Alastair Mackenzie as gadget-maker Q, Kiera Lester as M’s private secretary Moneypenny, Noémie Nakai as the “Bond girl” Miss Roth, and Gemma Chan as MI6’s Head of Tactical Simulation, Selina Tan.“007 First Light” will be released on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows on March 27, 2026.Are you excited about playing “007 First Light”?
