(Photo Credit: Hockey India)Veteran Indian umpire Raghu Prasad was on Tuesday named as the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) Male Umpire of the Year.Chosen by the FIH’s Umpiring Committee, Prasad was recognised for a ‘remarkable 23-year international career defined by consistency, resilience, and excellence’, the world body said in a statement.Argentina’s Irene Presenqui was named the Female Umpire of the Year.In Olympic and FIH Hockey World Cup years, the FIH Umpire of the Year title is awarded to the umpire who, in the opinion of the FIH Umpiring Committee, has delivered the highest level of performance across the period. In non-Olympic and non-World Cup years, like 2025, recipients may also be recognised for their broader or long-term contributions to the world of hockey umpiring.Prasad said: “Today is one of the most special moments of my career. When I look back at the long hours, sacrifices and challenges, this recognition feels deeply rewarding.”The Bangalore native, who once aspired to be a doctor, played hockey recreationally and turned to umpiring in 1999-2000 and started by officiating in school, college and local league tournaments.He made his international debut as a referee in 2003 and since then has officiated at every major tournament, including four World Cups and three Olympic Games, across all continents. Apart from the two biggest events in international hockey, Prasad has also umpired at the FIH Pro League, Commonwealth Games, Junior World Cups, and major Asian tournaments such as three Asian Games, multiple Asia Cups, and Asian Champions Trophies.Story continues below this ad“With 198 international umpiring caps and 33 video umpire appointments, Raghu is poised to achieve a historic milestone at the 2025 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia, where he will become the first-ever Asian umpire to reach 200 international caps,” the FIH said.It added: “Raghu’s enduring success reflects his exceptional fitness, sharp decision-making, and leadership on the field.
