(File image)The Karnataka Government will float tenders to commission a detailed study on the three locations it has identified to set up a second airport for Bengaluru, Industries Minister M B Patil has said.Patil told indianexpress.com on the sidelines of the Bengaluru Tech Summit earlier this week that the study would explore aspects such as the financial viability of the identified locations and technical feasibility, among others. “We will be floating tenders in a week,” he said.A consultancy picked following the tender process will be tasked with submitting the report, Patil said, adding that this would help finalise the location for the airport. An agreement between Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) and the Union Government prevents the development of another international airport within a 150-km aerial radius of the one run by BIAL at Devanahalli until 2033.The state had announced that it would start identifying locations for a second airport for Bengaluru, soon after Tamil Nadu announced plans for an airport at Hosur, located around 40 km southwest of Bengaluru. Tamil Nadu is also learnt to have submitted a site-clearance application for the Hosur airport earlier this month.Earlier this year, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducted an inspection of three sites as part of the process to finalise the location. According to sources in the industries department, the AAI has identified various challenges in each of the three locations and recommended measures to remove any obstacles for the movement of aircraft at the sites.Of the three locations, two are along Kanakapura Road and the other one is on Kunigal Road near Nelamangala. “The report by the consultancy is to ensure that a proposal for a specific site is optimised based on detailed analysis of terrain, projected air traffic, annual revenue and others,” an official said. It will be used to submit a proposal to the AAI to clear the site for the construction of an airport.Patil has said the initiative to start work on the second airport is being taken keeping in mind that the exclusivity clause of the agreement with BIAL will end in 2033. The Government plans to start work on a second airport by 2030, so that it will be operational after 2033.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt Ltd
