(File Photo)Central Railway’s Mumbai Division detected 9.63 lakh cases of ticketless and irregular travel between April and October this financial year — less than half of the 22.09 lakh cases recorded in the same period last year, according to data released on Sunday.The fall in violations comes despite intensified checks across Mail/Express and suburban services, including AC locals. Last year, the April–October period saw Central Railway collect ₹124.36 crore in penalties. This year, the division recovered ₹40.59 crore from 9.63 lakh offenders.Officials attributed the drop in cases to sustained enforcement and stricter monitoring in high-traffic areas, particularly second-class suburban coaches, which continue to make up the bulk of violations. Of the 9.63 lakh cases this year, 6.98 lakh were detected in second-class compartments, accounting for ₹33.69 crore in fines. First-class compartments contributed 91,837 cases, while 71,045 cases were detected in AC locals.In October alone, Mumbai Division recorded 1.34 lakh ticketless and irregular travel cases, The division collected ₹6.16 crore in fines during the month with over one lakh cases coming from second-class coaches.To address persistent violations in AC suburban trains, Central Railway has deployed a dedicated AC Local Ticket Checking Squad, equipped with a 24/7 WhatsApp complaint number (7208819987). The squad detects an average of 368 offenders daily, recovering around ₹1.19 lakh per day.“Central Railway maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards ticketless travel.
