Is waking up at 5 am better than at 7 am for your nervous system?

Wait 5 sec.

That’s the question we posed to experts to learn whether waking up at 5 am is better than 7 am. Saurabh Bothra, yoga teacher and co-founder, Habuild, said that the real secret is not the clock but the habit you build around it. “Our nervous system loves predictability. When you sleep and wake up at the same time every day, your body starts preparing for that rhythm automatically. This is why, for many people, a consistent 5 am practice feels easier and more energising than a late, irregular start,” said Bothra.Waking at dawn aligns with the body’s natural cycles. “Around 5 am, most people are in a lighter stage of sleep, so getting up feels easier and more refreshing. The air is cooler and quieter at that hour, which supports a calm ‘rest-and-restore’ response instead of the heightened alertness triggered by noise and activity later in the morning. By 7 am, the day’s sounds, screens, and traffic already activate the stress side of the nervous system,” said Bothra. What do you do in the mornings? On the other hand, waking up at 7 am after adequate sleep can support better recovery, memory consolidation, and hormonal balance,” said Dr Pal.Experts urge that the quality and regularity of sleep matter more than the exact time you wake up. “Hence, it’s best to choose a schedule that ensures complete rest. So, ensure that you complete 7-8 hours of sleep,” said Dr Pal.DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to.
