(File)A special court Wednesday granted interim bail to Sagar Gorkhe, a singer-performer booked in the Elgaar Parishad case, to be released from jail to prepare and attend his law examination.The court permitted Gorkhe to be released on temporary bail from November 20 to December 16, when he will have to surrender to jail.Gorkhe, who was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2020, and is lodged at Taloja Central Jail, is pursuing law. The trial in the case is yet to begin.While NIA opposed his plea, stating that there was a risk of his absconding while on bail, the special court noted that Gorkhe had been released on interim bail in the past and that the agency had not reported any violations of the bail conditions by him.In March last year, the court permitted Gorkhe temporary bail to give entrance exams for his law course, and again in December to attend the semester exams.“On both the occasions as above, this court imposed various conditions on the same applicant/accused. It is not the case of the NIA that the applicant/accused committed a breach of any of the conditions imposed upon him previously. He even surrendered as directed,” Special Judge C S Baviskar said.“During the above period of his temporary bail, the applicant/accused shall furnish an active mobile cell phone number to the jail authority concerned, to the investigating agency concerned and to the prosecution as well, and he shall keep that cell phone alive, so that, if required, he may be contacted and his whereabouts can be traced,” Judge Baviskar said.Story continues below this ad“If required, the prosecution/ investigating agency/NIA may monitor and track the whereabouts of the applicant/accused on that given cell phone number, for this period of temporary bail only,” the judge added.On Wednesday, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to co-accused Jyoti Jagtap, pending a hearing on her bail plea, scheduled for February 2026. The top court also extended the interim bail of Mahesh Raut, who was granted bail in 2023, but his release was stayed pending a hearing in the SC.Authorities arrested 16 people in connection with the Elgaar Parishad case — the Pune police arrested nine in 2018, and the NIA arrested seven others during its investigation.Of the 16, Father Stan Swamy passed away in custody in 2021. Among those in prison are lawyer Surendra Gadling and Delhi University professor Hany Babu.Story continues below this adThe charges in the case are yet to be framed.
