007 fans had better start preparing themselves not only for several upcoming installments and reboots, but also for more than one iteration of the MI6 superspy himself. But they might also want to brace themselves for a female James Bond (yes, you read that right). The Bond franchise has never been shy about producing content across multiple forms of media. Though there have been some brief hiatuses here and there, the franchise has otherwise been in a constant state of motion since its inception with Ian Fleming’s original 1953 novel, “Casino Royale.” Since then, we’ve had a library of novels from different authors following Fleming’s death, and, of course, 27 films (including the original Casino Royale starring David Niven, and the non-Eon film Never Say Never Again with Sean Connery).Credit: MGM/EON ProductionsWhile the film reboot from director Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part Two) and writer Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) doesn’t have a release date, next year will see third-person action-adventure video game “007 First Light” and three new James Bond novels hit shelves. Those novels are “The Man with the Golden Compass”, the second entry in Vaseem Khan’s new Q Mysteries series that debuted this year with “Quantum of Menace”; M.W. Craven’s “James Bond and the Secret Agent Academy”, a YA novel that centers on 007 training young new recruits at MI6; and “Hurricane Room”, the third installment in Kim Sherwood’s Double O series, which follows her last two, “Double or Nothing” and “A Spy Like Me.”Credit: MGM/EON ProductionsRelated: Meet the New James Bond in the Upcoming ‘007’ RebootBut Bond is not one of the main characters in Sherwood’s series. Instead, they focus on other 00 agents, including 003, Johanna Harwood, a former surgeon and girlfriend of Bond. The author recently shared an excerpt from her new book with People. While the snippet confirms that Bond will have a more prominent role this time, 003 isn’t going anywhere. But could Johanna Harwood get some attention on the big screen (or on the small screen) at some point in the future? Is she destined to become the long-debated “female James Bond”?One might roll their eyes at such a thought, but a female James Bond isn’t as out of the ordinary as you might think. Of course, Bond is an entirely separate character, and a “female version” simply means a female equivalent — not a “gender-swapped” re-creation.Credit: Inside the MagicHarwood is hardly the only female 00 agent in the franchise, either. On the big screen, Daniel Craig’s last outing, No Time to Die (2021), gave us Nomi (Lashana Lynch), who temporarily held the 007 title while Bond was absent. This led to complaints from some fans, but the moniker ultimately reverted back to the iconic MI6 agent before his demise.Whether or not Bond will be reimagined as a female character in a future installment remains to be seen, but some key figures such as longtime producer Barbara Broccoli, Daniel Craig himself, and his No Time to Die co-star Ana de Armas, have openly opposed the idea. However, female 00 agents would be a different matter — one could even end up taking center stage for a while. And there are plenty of characters to choose from. Beyond Hardwood, there’s Nomi, and even Mathilde Swann (played in No Time to Die by Lisa-Dorah Sonnet), the daughter Bond shares with Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux). Mathilde’s return could continue the Daniel Craig timeline without that actor ever having to reprise his role.Credit: Inside the MagicA female James Bond might sound like nothing more than an Internet meme or a “woke” concept, but never say never (a perfect name for a film with a female agent as the lead). For now, it seems Amazon MGM’s film will star another James Bond — and rightly so, because the character is male. Still, if the studio and the filmmakers are looking to shake things up (not stir) — even if it’s in the form of a spinoff or an adjacent reboot — perhaps a “female James Bond” isn’t a bad idea. Either way, the most logical option would be Mathilde Swann. After all, she’s Bond’s daughter, and who better to continue 007’s iconic legacy.“Hurricane Room” will be released in May 2026.“James Bond and the Secret Agent Academy” and “The Man With the Golden Compass” will be released in June 2026 and October 2026, respectively. The video game “007 First Light” hits shelves in March. Are you excited about all the upcoming James Bond content?
