The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has always been in a state of reinvention. Whether it’s the comic books, cartoon shows, or live-action movies, the heroes in a half-shell have been constantly reinterpreted for new generations since their inception back in 1984.In addition to comic books spanning over 40 years, there are seven theatrical films, a live-action TV series, and five animated TV ones. Most recently, the 3D animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023) revived the franchise on the big screen, grossing $180.5 million worldwide against its $70 million budget and receiving wide praise.Credit: Nickelodeon Movies / Paramount PicturesA sequel was greenlit before Mutant Mayhem even hit theaters. It was originally scheduled for release in 2026 but was recently pushed back to 2027 as part of a reshuffle at Paramount. The film also spawned the video game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed (2024), and a 2D animated TV series, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2024).But now, Paramount has confirmed that it has canceled Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with the upcoming second season for Paramount+ and Nicktoons set to be its last.Credit: Paramount Animation / Nickelodeon MoviesRelated: ‘TMNT’ Film Series Officially Dead in the Water as New Reboot Takes OverHistorically, TMNT cartoon shows have enjoyed longer shelf lives: the 1987 series became a pop culture phenomenon and lasted nine years before departing our screens; the 2003 reboot series ran until 2009; and the 3D animated series launched in 2012 got five years under its belt. However, it seems Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has gone the way of 2018’s Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which also lasted just two seasons.Reasons for the latest series’ cancelation aren’t fully clear, but Season 1 has a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 8.0/10 based on 9 reviews. However, some viewers and critics felt that it failed to live up to the standards set by its movie counterpart, while others said it’s also a downgrade compared to previous TMNT cartoons.Credit: Nickelodeon Movies / Paramount PicturesNews of the cancelation follows the Paramount-Skydance merger, which has led to a wide-scale restructuring across the company and the canceling of other similar projects.Fortunately, beyond the second season of Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Mutant Mayhem shared cinematic universe will continue in a new short film titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2 – Lost in New Jersey, which will be released in theaters on December 19 this year. Check out the official trailer below:Meanwhile, Paramount is also moving forward with another live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film — a big-screen adaptation of the IDW comic book series, The Last Ronin. Former DC Films head Walter Hamada is producing the reboot through his 18hz production company, while Tyler Burton Smith (2019’s Child’s Play reboot) is writing the screenplay.Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season 2 will premiere on Paramount+ this December.
