Ex-Tottenham Hotspur star Tony Galvin suffers stroke as club release statement

Tottenham Hotspur legend Tony Galvin has suffered a stroke, the club have confirmed.The former winger, who is 69 years old, is recovering following the health scare.Spurs icon Galvin is recovering after suffering a stroke, the club have confirmedGettySpurs announced the news in a statement released on their social media channels.Writing on X, the club said: “Everyone at the club would like to extend their thoughts and best wishes to Tony Galvin, our 1984 UEFA Cup and 1981 & 82 FA Cup winner, who is now recovering following a stroke.“We’re all behind you, Tony.”Galvin spent nine years with Spurs as a player between 1978 and 1987.During that time, he won the FA Cup twice before lifting the FA Cup with the club.The former Republic of Ireland international also had spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Swindon Town.He is best known for his time at White Hart Lane, though, where he made 201 league appearances.Galvin had been part of a side which featured the likes of Glenn Hoddle, Ossie Ardiles and Steve Perryman.The wideman had started his career in non-league with Goole Town before moving to Spurs.He went on to play a key role in back-to-back FA Cup triumphs at the start of the 1980s.Galvin made 201 league appearances during nine years with SpursGettyGalvin started the 1981 final against Manchester City before doing the same in the replay five days later as Spurs lifted the trophy.They would repeat the feat the following year, this time beating Queens Park Rangers in a replay.Spurs also won the Community Shield in between those cup victories before tasting continental glory in 1984.Galvin was once again integral in their run to the UEFA Cup final.Wins over Drogheda United, Feyenoord, Bayern Munich, Austria Vienna and Hajduk Split saw Spurs reach the showpiece clash.They then beat Belgian side Anderlecht on penalties after the tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.TgsphotoGalvin won the UEFA Cup and two FA Cups during his time with Spurs[/caption]Galvin retired at Swindon in 1990 after being signed by Ardiles at the start of the campaign.He would later become the Argentinian’s assistant manager before holding the same role under him at Newcastle.
