(Express photo)Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday paid floral tributes to freedom fighter Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha on his 110th martyrdom anniversary and announced development projects worth Rs 45.84 crore for his native Sarabha village in Ludhiana district.Mann also paid homage to Sarabha’s companions, including Vishnu Ganesh Pingle, Bakhshish Singh, Jagat Singh, Surein Singh (Senior), Shaheed Harnam Singh Sialkoti and Surein Singh (Junior), who were also executed the same day.Mann paid tributes to the revolutionary leader at his ancestral home in Sarabha village, a protected heritage property.Kartar Singh Sarabha was a leading member of the Ghadar Party and a revolutionary who fought for the country’s freedom. He was hanged to death by the British on November 16, 1915, when he was just 19. Sarabha had moved to the US in 1912 for higher studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where he joined the Ghadar Party. He had returned to India to join the rebellion against the British and was executed at the Lahore Central Jail.The CM announced development projects worth Rs 45.48 crore for Sarabha village to provide basic infrastructure, clean drinking water, sports facilities, defence training and other amenities.Mann said this would be a true tribute to the martyr, adding that the state government would leave no stone unturned to develop Sarabha as a model village.Mann said, “As an active leader of the Ghadar Party, Sarabha worked tirelessly, first abroad and then in India, for the country’s freedom. Sarabha was so sharp and bright that more than a century ago, he had secured admission at a university in Berkeley. Even today, it is a herculean task to get admission in that university, which he did then.”Story continues below this adMann further said that the villagers have also demanded an “Indian Air Force (IAF) training academy and a drone flying centre” for their village as Sarabha was also a trained pilot. “Only the people of Sarabha can demand something like this as they know it’s importance. Every effort will be paid to fulfil these demands,” said Mann.Mann said that Rs 40 crore will be spent on widening the existing two-lane road from Lalton Kalan to Sarabha, Raikot which leads to Halwara airport. Similarly, Rs 2.82 crore will be spent on a surface water supply scheme, Rs 2 crore on a 10-metre indoor shooting range, Rs 10 lakh on the renovation of the basketball ground, and Rs 3 lakh on developing a volleyball court and constructing six concrete benches at the sports ground.Mann said that Rs 89 lakh will be spent on upgrading the Forest Nursery adding that a “training academy for security and police forces” will also be established including exhibition of derelict MiG-21 aircraft for pilot and drone training.Mann further said that the AAP government decided to announce a “holiday” on martyr’s martyrdom anniversary (November 16) every year so that “children question their parents Kartar Singh Sarabha” and his “martyrdom becomes a topic of discussion in every household.”Story continues below this ad“Children and youth should know that this independence hasn’t come for free.
