The NFL played its first ever international game in Madrid, Spain on Sunday. The Bernabéu – home of soccer juggernauts Real Madrid – hosted the NFL matchup between the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Commanders. There were multiple questionable calls, but perhaps none bigger than a penalty flag being thrown for pass interference against the Dolphins defense in the second quarter. As Commanders wide receiver Deebo Samuel was running his route, the ball sailed over his head with him in the vicinity of two Dolphins defenders.Samuel was not touched by either defender, but a flag was thrown nonetheless giving Washington a huge first down trailing 6-3 at that point in the contest. He even took off his headset as he suffered his first crash out of the game. His temper flared once again when the refs threw another penalty flag flew for defensive pass interference despite the ball appearing to be out of bounds and clearly uncatchable. This time, though, McDaniel lobbied hard to the officials to state his case, and the referees ultimately picked up the flag.NFL Network announcers slammed for comments on McDanielDuring the NFL Network broadcast of the game, commentators Jonathan Vilma and Kenny Albert came under fire for comments made about McDaniel in which they spoke candidly – and out of turn – about the Dolphins HC’s prior drinking problem. McDaniel has made no secret of the personal battle he has faced, and on Wednesday, he credited Commanders head coach Dan Quinn for helping him to overcome his inner demons in 2016.McDaniel’s personal issues were aired out for all to hear thanks to the NFL Network announcersGetty“Dan Quinn holds a special place in my heart and my career,” McDaniel said. “I think he was there at ground zero when I became sober and supported me and gave me the opportunity to continue what I love to do. So for that, I’ll be forever indebted to him.“I think it speaks to the type of leader he is – I know he really touches every player he coaches from a true, authentic standpoint. I think the Commanders are very fortunate to have him.”The two worked together at the Atlanta Falcons when Quinn was the head coach and McDaniel was an offensive assistant when the Dolphins coach was served with a sobriety ultimatum by the Falcons coaching staff which also included Kyle Shanahan – now head coach of the San Francisco 49ers – and current Falcons head coach Raheem Morris. Having heard what McDaniel had said about him during his media availability, Quinn also took the time to address his former colleague’s comments, where he said: I think when there’s an issue, sometimes you don’t want to let somebody you’re with know,” Quinn said. “You’re counting on them. They’re counting on you. But really, you’re leaning in, that’s the biggest strength we can do. “And in that space, all I want to do is help and give support, and then the real work begins for the person who’s in that spot. And that’s exactly what Mike did. … And it’s part of the reason I’m so proud of him.”Fans were left irate about the commentators deciding to speak on the matter, and took to social media to express their discontent.“Can’t explain how unprofessional this NFL Network crew discussing McDaniel’s past difficulties with alcohol is,” one fan posted to X (formerly Twitter). “DID HE JUST SAY MIKE MCDANIEL HAD A DRINKING PROBLEM ON AIR????,” another fan fumed. “Why is the NFL telling us the Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel used to have a drinking problem unprovoked???,” a third said.“Absolutely no reason to keep bringing up Mike McDaniel’s past drinking issues… WTF is this commentary,” a fourth questionned.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more.
