By: Express News ServiceNew Delhi | November 18, 2025 05:30 AM IST 2 min readIn a major relief for Delhiites, the state government has decided to lift the restriction on provision of electricity connections in ‘booked properties’.ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW VIDEOA senior official said that the decision was taken in a meeting held by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, following which an official order was issued.Gupta said that this decision will provide immediate benefit to more than 1.25 lakh families across Delhi. “Even those properties booked by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) over unauthorised construction will be eligible to receive electricity connections,” Gupta said.She said that depriving consumers of basic facilities is not justified under any circumstances. “This order is a significant step towards safeguarding citizens’ fundamental rights and bringing more transparency to the system,” Gupta said.Officials said that the Power department had been receiving multiple complaints from people stating that DISCOMs either denied or disconnected electricity connections on the grounds that the properties concerned had been ‘booked’ by the MCD over unauthorised construction. Officials said that in several such cases, it was found that even years after demolition orders were issued by the MCD, no action was taken due to several reasons.As per the new order, DISCOMs can no longer deny electricity connections merely on the ground that a property has been booked by the MCD over unauthorised construction.The Chief Minister said that a connection can be denied only when the MCD formally notifies that a property is under demolition or sealing action, adding that instructions have also been issued to strengthen coordination between DISCOMs and the civic body to curb discrepancy.Story continues below this adShe added that the move will also help curb theft and unauthorised use of electricity.“Delhi government prioritises transparent governance and citizens’ right to essential services.
