Ugandan actress Debbie Bakuseka returned home yesterday after a week-long trip to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, where she attended the 10th Edition of the prestigious Sotigui Awards.Debbie had been nominated for Best Actress in East Africa, an honour that meant a lot to her and one she was determined to experience in person. To make the trip possible, she reached out to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) for support, and her request was graciously granted. She travelled to Burkina Faso on Tuesday, 11th November, joining actors and film professionals from all over the continent for a celebration of African cinema.New Ugandan film “SHADOW” to feature Nigerian actor Hakeem Kae-KazimWhen I asked her about the experience, she shared the following:It was an awesome experience. As a nominee, I got to mingle with actors from all over Africa and the Diaspora, and also meet government officials from Burkina Faso and distinguished professionals from organisations such as Telecel Burkina, Canal+, Coris International Bank, to mention a few.I attended conferences, workshops, and participated in media rounds, all centred on the film industry. We celebrated African talent and achievements by legends from all walks of life, and the highlight was attending the awards night gala, glamorous and filled with international media coverage. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I wish every actor could have. The learning, the exposure, the acting techniques were priceless. I am forever grateful to UCC for the support they continuously extend to actors.Debbie’s experience highlights an important opportunity for the Ugandan film sector, and I personally think that UCC should introduce mandatory feedback sessions for all practitioners sponsored to attend international festivals, workshops, and conferences.Such sessions would create a space where returning filmmakers can share best practices, insights, techniques, and global industry trends with the wider community. This approach would not only multiply the value of each sponsored trip but also help equip local filmmakers, actors, and producers with knowledge they might otherwise never access, hence ultimately strengthening the entire sector.Welcome back home, Debbie. We hope the connections you made enrich not only your personal career but also contribute to the growth of the Ugandan film industry. To the UCC Executive Director, Hon. Nnyombi Thembo, thank you for your continuous support and kindness towards filmmakers. The post Debbie Bakuseka returns after attending 10th Edition of Sotigui Awards, celebrates African cinema appeared first on MBU.
