Not to be all teacher’s pet about it, but if you ask Quinta Brunson to recommend some great gift ideas for teachers, the creator and star of Abbott Elementary is going to ace that assignment. “I try to think of gift giving as, what will the person not get for themselves? That’s where I always try to come from,” Brunson explained on a video call recently. “Like, what is that person not going to actually splurge on for themselves?”When it comes to teachers, she knows how to answer those questions — not just because she’s five seasons into a hit TV show about them, but also because her real-life mom, Norma Jean Brunson, taught in Philadelphia’s public school system for decades. Quinta Brunson is reprising her role as cheery teacher Janine Teagues in the fifth season of “Abbott Elementary.” ABC/DisneyA nice water bottle, for example, seems like a can’t-miss teacher’s gift. In Brunson’s experience, though, that’s something that a teacher is likely to have already spent money on since it ranks as a necessity. For gift giving, she instead favors little luxuries that may not be quite as essential but can definitely deliver a dose of comfort and joy to a teacher’s day, be it in the classroom or at home.“It’s things where I know they’re like, ‘That’s too expensive. I don’t need that,’” she says. “That’s exactly what you should get them, if you can.”Whether your child is looking to spend their own money on an affordable show of thanks, or you’re planning to chip in with other class parents on a splurgier present, here are the gifts that Brunson recommends for the awesome educators in your life.
