Chiefs historic struggles laid bare in damning stats as Patrick Mahomes team labeled least ‘clutch’ in NFL

Wait 5 sec.

The Kansas City Chiefs know a thing or two about coming up clutch.Last season, Andy Reid‘s dynasty went 15-2 en-route to Super Bowl LIX and were 12-0 in one-score games, including the playoffs.A once-clutch Chiefs team led by Mahomes is struggling in the big momentsGettyWhile the Chiefs were handed an embarrassing loss at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans, they had lifted the Lombardi Trophy on back-to-back occasions in 2022 and 2023.But things are different this year and a Super Bowl run is looking highly unlikely.Kansas City, in fact, is trending to be one of the NFL‘s worst teams in do-or-die situations and falling in talkSPORT’s power rankings.Through 11 weeks of the season, the Chiefs are 0-5 in one-score games. Their overall record is 5-5, and playoff hopes are hanging in the balance with Reid assigning rare blame for the struggles.Compared to this time last year, when they boasted a 9-1 record, the team is actually posting better numbers in major statistical categories — including points scored and allowed per game. But their results are not reflecting that, and a deeper dive by The Athletic suggests the Chiefs are on course to be ‘one of the most unclutch NFL teams’ in recent memory.Kansas City’s offensive struggles laid bare in damning statsThe Athletic’s Chiefs writer, Jesse Newell, has used TruMedia data to concluded that the once-dominating franchise is struggling in the big moments. He analysed regular-season plays that hit the following criteria:Were called when the score was within eight points either wayWere called in the final five minutes of regulation timeWere only non-kneeldown snapsAccording to Newell, KC were strong in those moments last season.Mahomes has not been able to execute with his back against the wall in 2025GettyTheir 43% offensive success rate ranked in the top 15 among NFL teams, and they also completed 57% of their passes. In 2025, though, the numbers are far more concerning. The Chiefs offense has had 11 snaps in the scenarios detailed above.Patrick Mahomes, who has a reputation as one of the NFL’s best big-play quarterbacks, is 2/10 passing for 29 yards while also taking a sack.KC also had a delay-of-game penalty to add into the mix, meaning those 11 snaps resulted in a net of just 13 yards. With his back against the wall in big moments against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos, Mahomes has struggled and the Chiefs lost all three of those games.Newell writes that the offense’s 18% success rate in late scenarios (two out of 11 plays), is the lowest of any NFL team over the last eight years.KC’s offense is trending to be one of the worst of recent memory in ‘clutch’ momentsGettyThere are problems on the defense too.How much has the Chiefs D struggled in 2025?With the same above criteria applied to Steve Spagnuolo’s unit, Kansas City has faced seven ‘clutch’ downs so far. Those plays have resulted in allowing six first downs on seven attempts, and 4/4 passing attempts for 69 yards.Opposition teams managed to convert on a third-and-15, third-and-14 and two third-and-7 downs. The Chiefs defense has given up plenty of yards in critical momentsGettyNewell concludes that KC’s 14% defensive success rate (one out of seven) is tied for the worst NFL mark since TruMedia started tracking data 26 years ago.In 2024, when facing nine snaps in those situations, the Chiefs defense ranked top across the league.Quite what has happened this season is anyone’s guess. A once-terrifying Kansas City team has bottled almost all the big moments. If these trends continue, reaching the postseason will be a distant dream. NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare? But if the Chiefs can return to their similar clutch form of 2024, then they will once again be the squad that no one wants to face in the playoffs.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more.
