Sarina Wiegman offers testy response to Mary Earps question in first press conference since controversial book launch

Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman made it clear she wanted to talk about on-field matters rather than Mary Earps in four piercing words.Tuesday’s press conference marked the first time Wiegman had spoken to the media since Earps’ explosive book, ‘All In’, was launched. In the book, Earps details her perspective of the conversations she had with Wiegman over the return of Hannah Hampton to the starting line-up ahead of a match against Ireland in April 2024.Earps felt the Lionesses boss had rewarded Hampton’s ‘bad behaviour’, which she supposedly exhibited during the 2022 European Championships.Wiegman was asked about Earps’ comments with the first question of the press conference and insisted she can’t ‘react anything more’ while reiterating the conversations she has with players past and present remain private. What Wiegman had to say about the Earps saga“What my reality is and what someone else’s reality is can be different because how you experience things is very individual,” Wiegman said.“I just know what I want to do is create an environment where we speak up and have clarity.“Also, I make decisions to win. And what I’ve said all the time is that we have two incredible goalkeepers and ad the end I made that decision to the one I came to and that’s what it is for me.”Another question, this time about Hannah Hampton, who displaced Earps as England’s first-choice goalkeeper but is absent from the squad through injury, followed and was answered by Wiegman before she issued a testy response to the reporters present.“Can we talk football?” Wiegman, who has not spoken to Earps since the book launch, said. Why is there drama surrounding Earps, Hampton and Wiegman? The saga involving, Wiegman, Hampton and Earps exploded when excerpts of the former Manchester United goalkeeper’s book were released. In those excerpts, Earps detailed how Hampton’s behaviour ‘frequently risked derailing training sessions and team resources.’What Earps said about Wiegman and HamptonEarps said of Hampton: “Her behaviour behind the scenes at the Euros had frequently risked derailing training sessions and team resources.“The only negative that each group reported back on was that behaviour, which was overwhelmingly considered disruptive and unreliable, with a risk of being destructive, taking energy and time from coaches who needed to work with the rest of the team on set-pieces, mentality and of course goalkeeping sessions.“It affected us all in a domino effect to an extent that was extremely unusual in a successful elite team environment.“It also completely contradicted my professional values, which included preserving everything I had, mentally and physically, for performance and for a goalkeeper union where everyone, whatever their role, had the space and support to be great at their job.”Much to Earps’ surprise, Wiegman later reintroduced Hampton to the squad and attempted to swiftly put the matter to bed.Earps claims the serial winner said: “This has been dealt with, and it’s not appropriate to speak about one individual any more.”Earps also saw it as against her values to reward bad behaviour, but Wiegman responded by claiming that Hampton deserved a second chance.By the time the next tournament rolled around in 2025, Hampton was the new No.1 and helped get revenge on Spain with a stunning performance to win the shoot-out in the final.Yet for Earps, it wasn’t as simple as being out-performed, as she was told she’d lost her spot for some friendlies in April 2024 and hit back.“I don’t get it,” she claims she told Wiegman. “It’s a qualifier match. And bad behaviour is being rewarded.”Ahead of the 2025 Euros, Earps was then told that Hampton would be No.1 in a meeting that left her feeling ‘sick and anxious’.And when she told Wiegman she could’ve been more ‘direct and honest’, the Dutch coach called the comments ‘unfair’.But there was another bombshell to come, as Earps recalls saying: “It doesn’t align with my morals and values to continue.“I’d like to graciously step aside. I’d rather Khiara [Keating] get the experience. I’ve had my time in the sun.”So when Wiegman reintroduced Hampton back into the fold, Earps was not a fan.The issue came to a head prior to the 2025 European Championships as Wiegman decided Hampton had usurped Earps.Wiegman’s decision prompted Earps to immediately call time on her international career in the lead-up to Euro 2025, leaving Hampton as the undisputed number one goalkeeper. It was a move that evidently paid dividends as Hampton played a starring role for the Lionesses in their successful title defence, where she made two saves during the penalty shootout against Spain in the final.Wiegman preaches unity rather than divisionDespite Earps’ comments and the subsequent fallout, Wiegman remained adamant the book would not cause divisions within her squad.“I’m not worried about that,” Wiegman said.Wiegman wanted to keep the Earps chat to a minimum at the press conferenceGetty“When there are teams there are always dynamics going on. We’re working with people and everyone is different. No matter what the topic is, there are always conversations going on.“Sometimes you need more and sometimes you need less. I want my door to be open at all times to have conversations when needed or if someone needs support and the other way round if I need to challenge a player for whatever reason.“So there are always conversations going on and we’re trying to get everyone going in the same direction on the pitch.”When are the Lionesses in action next?Wiegman’s side hope to round out the year with a pair of wins, beginning with a match against China at Wembley on November 29.They wrap up the international window two days later against Ghana at St. Mary’s in Southampton.
