John Boyega and Oscar Isaac Refuse To Rejoin ‘Star Wars’ Unless Disney Meets Strict Conditions

John Boyega has revealed the exact circumstances in which he would return to the Star Wars franchise. The Star Wars sequel trilogy proved divisive with many hardcore fans, but for many, one of its biggest flaws is that it just didn’t contain enough John Boyega. While the British actor’s Finn – a redeemed Stormtrooper who’s hinted to be sensitive to the Force – was positioned as a pivotal character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), his role was reduced significantly in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), a move that Boyega himself has criticized.Credit: LucasFilm“What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side,” Boyega told GQ in 2020. “It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.”Boyega also slammed The Last Jedi as the worst Star Wars film and called out The Walt Disney Company for focusing more on his white co-stars and their respective characters’ stories within the trilogy.“You guys knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver,” Boyega said. “But when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know f**k all. … They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. Let’s be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I’m not exposing anything.”Credit: LucasfilmThis wasn’t the only time Boyega criticized the trilogy’s handling of Finn as a Black character in a famously white galaxy far, far away. He later revealed that he had a constructive conversation with Disney about his experiences in Star Wars and has now revealed what it would take to get him back in the franchise.John Boyega Reveals How Finn Would Return to ‘Star Wars’During an appearance at Liverpool Comic Con, Boyega set out three conditions for his Star Wars return. The first is that the project should be a film (basically, don’t expect a Finn Disney+ series any time soon). The second is that it must feature both Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), with Poe and Finn’s bromance – something many hoped would turn romantic in the trilogy – playing a large role.Credit: Lucasfilm“Me and Oscar are very stubborn, and we believe the bromance should only be on the big screen,” Boyega said. The third is that it would need to be “a great script.”Of course, getting a good Star Wars script is easier said than done nowadays. Despite being announced several years ago and cycling through creative teams, Lucasfilm has yet to bring Daisy Ridley’s standalone Rey film to life. Boyega himself confirmed that he knows nothing about the project – and that he would spill all the details if he did.“Trust me, I’m like the Tom Holland of ‘Star Wars,'” he said. “Once I know something, I’ll let you know.”Presumably, the same is true of another Star Wars project in the headlines recently: The Hunt for Ben Solo.Credit: LucasfilmAdam Driver revealed that Disney shot down his return as a redeemed Ben Solo in a film set after The Rise of Skywalker. After reading a complete script, Disney CEO Bob Iger and Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, Alan Bergman, apparently said no. “They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive,” Driver told the Associated Press. “And that was that.”Fans haven’t lost hope that the project may yet receive a green light, with a plane spotted flying above The Walt Disney Studios bearing the message “SAVE #THEHUNTFORBENSOLO.” Missing person posters featuring Driver’s face were even put up around Los Angeles.Oscar Isaac’s Own Condition For Returning to ‘Star Wars’Fans hoping that Boyega’s comments mean a Finn return is imminent may need to temper their expectations. Boyega’s return is dependent on the involvement of Oscar Isaac, who recently made it clear that Disney must meet one important condition to win him over: not falling to fascism.Credit: Lucasfilm“I’d be open to it, although right now I’m not so open to working with Disney,” Isaac told GQ in the wake of Disney’s temporary suspension of TV host Jimmy Kimmel in the wake of his comments on Charlie Kirk (and subsequent pressure from the Trump administration). “But if they can kinda figure it out and, you know, not succumb to fascism, that would be great … if that happens, then yeah, I’d be open to having a conversation about a galaxy far away. Or any number of other things.”In other words, we may be waiting a while to see Boyega and Isaac back as the galaxy’s most dynamic duo.Would you like to see John Boyega back as Poe?The post John Boyega and Oscar Isaac Refuse To Rejoin ‘Star Wars’ Unless Disney Meets Strict Conditions appeared first on Inside the Magic.
