New York Jets may face $57 million debacle with quarterbacks no longer on the roster as Justin Fields is benched

Wait 5 sec.

The New York Jets’ quarterback carousel continues to spin.Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has decided to bench Justin Fields in favor of Tyrod Taylor, who will start Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. The change at quarterback shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as Glenn hinted everything would be on the table just a few days prior.“I’m evaluating everything, to be honest with you,” Glenn said Friday, following New York’s 27–14 loss to the New England Patriots on Thursday night that dropped the team to 2–8.Fields has struggled mightily this season and threw for just 116 yards in the loss to New England. The Jets sit dead last in passing offense at 139.9 yards per game, and Fields has produced only 505 yards over his last five starts. While Kirk Herbstreit discussed the Jets potentially pursuing Kirk Cousins, ESPN’s Rich Cimini also broke down the team’s options moving forward.Fields remains under contract through 2026, having signed a two-year, $40 million deal in March, but with the latest benching, his long-term role with the team is now very much up in the air.Cimini believes the Jets will have a new starting quarterback in 2026, whether a veteran or a rookie, but he also pointed out the staggering amount of dead money the team would incur if they chose to carry two former quarterbacks on the roster.“Looking ahead: If the Jets cut Justin Fields before June 1, they will have a $22 million cap charge. Aaron Rodgers will count $35 million in 2026. So potentially $57 million on the cap for former QBs,” Cimini wrote on X.Carrying $57 million in dead money for two players no longer on the roster is far from ideal, but the Jets may have little choice moving forward.Rodgers has been long gone, and now Fields looks to be on his way out once the season concludes. At 2-8, they are currently projected to draft fifth overall, where taking a quarterback is very likely.Justin Fields could be one and done in New YorkGettyThe Fields era looks to be all but overGettyHowever, as Herbstreit noted last week, this year’s quarterback draft class has fallen short of expectations.“Do you go through the draft next year? Do you wait? To be candid, covering college football, this was supposed to be a monster year for quarterbacks,” Herbstreit said.“Turns out a lot of them flopped, and so you’re looking at the following year being a huge year.“So do you go for a stopgap, Kirk Cousins–type guy for ‘26, and then use that draft capital in other areas to get stronger, and then go for the home-run potential in ‘27? That’s probably the direction I would go.”“A lot of people think of Arch Manning — you know, he was supposed to be a guy maybe coming out this year,” Herbstreit said.“My guess would be he’ll come back to college for one more year. So he might be the guy in ‘27 that maybe the Jets could possibly hold out and get that following year.”talkSPORT reacts...Be patient with Aaron GlennYes, a 2-8 record through 10 games is horrific. There’s no sugarcoating it.Yes, Aaron Glenn has at times been snappy and curt with the media, a demeanor that can wear thin as losses start to pile up.Despite the early challenges of Glenn’s first season as head coach, talk to any of his players and they will sing his praises. That’s culture. That’s leadership. That’s why, despite another losing season in the Big Apple, there’s reason for hope and optimism heading into 2026. Now, if Glenn doesn’t start winning games, he will eventually be dismissed, but sometimes you have to tear it all down before it can get better.Look at Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions in 2021. The losses piled up, and people called for Campbell’s head in Year One, but look at what they’ve accomplished over the last three seasons.Glenn knows all about the process; he was the defensive coordinator there and understands what it takes to turn around a beaten-down franchise. New York just happens to still be in the early stages of its own rebuild.Stay patient Gang Green, stay patient.Jack Savage, NFL WriterNFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare? The Jets have seven games left in the season. They will once again miss the playoffs, extending a drought that dates back to 2010.There are dark times in New York, but the silver lining is that Glenn has the ability to establish a new culture and foundation, serving as the voice that could guide the team back to the postseason. It’s clear the team hasn’t given up on him or the season and continues to fight hard. While there are, of course, no moral victories, their effort reflects positively on Glenn’s leadership.Eventually, he and the rest of the staff and front office will need to start winning games, but that likely won’t begin until next year, and it appears it will be without Fields.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more
