Record-Breaking Performances Shine At Malta Weightlifting National Championships

Maltese weightlifters smashed records and delivered outstanding performances at the Malta Weightlifting National Championships, held last weekend. The annual event brought together the country’s top lifters across all age and weight divisions, with several standout moments that underlined just how fast the sport is growing in Malta. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)In the Cadet and U15 Girls’ categories, Mia Sant claimed the Cadet title with lifts of 32kg (Snatch) and 43kg (Clean & Jerk), while Emily Livori took home the U15 crown after lifting 37kg and 48kg respectively. Among the boys, Nathan Mifsud stole the show — dominating the U15 and U17 divisions, breaking nine national records, and posting incredible lifts of 95kg in the Snatch and 110kg in the Clean & Jerk. Thirteen-year-old Gabriele Frendo also made his mark with a flawless six-lift streak, finishing at 75kg and 88kg. On the women’s side, Aaliyah Gatt won the U17 69kg division, breaking two national records with lifts of 71kg and 98kg. Kim Camilleri Laganà continued her incredible form, taking titles across the U17, U20, and Senior 53kg categories with 67kg and 95kg. Making a strong comeback from injury, Tenishia Thornton reclaimed her dominance, winning the 69kg Junior and Senior titles with a total of 178kg. Meanwhile, Kaya Curmi Inguanez secured second place in the 53kg category with 131kg. In the Men’s Junior division, Rylee Borg broke three national Snatch records, hitting 126kg, while Nathaniel Fenech impressed by winning the U20 79kg class. Vlad Baldacchino took home the Senior 110kg title with 130kg and 152kg lifts. The championships celebrated both rising stars and veteran lifters, confirming Malta’s growing strength in the sport. The next big challenge comes 6th–7th December, when Malta will host over 100 athletes from 22 countries for the European Union and Malta Junior Open Weightlifting Championship.•
