(File photo/Representational)Opposing the bail plea of a clerk-cum-typist Chandrakant Vasudev named as an accused in a bribery case, the Mumbai Anti-Corruption Bureau on Wednesday submitted before a court that during investigation, it found there were WhatsApp calls after court hours between him and an additional sessions judge, whom the probe agency had named as a wanted accused in its remand plea. The ACB said if granted bail, the clerk may tamper with evidence and that witness statements were yet to be taken.Vasudev had on Monday filed for bail, days after he was arrested by the ACB after he was allegedly caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 15 lakh. The ACB, in its response, opposed the bail plea and claimed that the explanation given by the clerk about the calls was not convincing.Vasudev allegedly told the police that he had been assigned as the clerk in the judge’s court for a year, and that they share a cordial interaction. The clerk “explained” the calls between them, stating that the judge would frequently help him in his personal issues.The ACB claimed that the bribe was demanded by the clerk, who claimed that it was taken on behalf of the judge.The complainant in the bribery case had a land dispute case before the judge. The complainant’s associate was approached by the clerk when the former went for a hearing in the matter last month.After the clerk was caught, the ACB claims that a WhatsApp call was made from his phone to the judge, who allegedly acknowledged the receipt of the bribe amount when the clerk informed him about it. The ACB alleged that the judge told the clerk to come to his home with the amount, and the call was recorded in the presence of independent witnesses.
