After a drama-free 2024, the Las Vegas Grand Prix is set for more disruptions, this time in the form of the weather. The track’s 2023 Formula 1 debut brought with it loose drain covers and threats of a postponement, and for its third edition it will have to contend with a major weather warning.Drivers will likely be welcomed by some unpleasant conditions on WednesdayGettyA major flood warning has been issued ahead of the event which unusually runs from Thursday until Saturday, instead of the usual Friday to Sunday schedule. As such, media day takes place a day earlier on Wednesday when drivers and prominent team members will be ferrying about for media duties across the world’s gambling capital.According to the National Weather Service, Vegas is in the area set to be affected by heavy rainfall and flooding.Yet any chance of the warning carrying over to on-track action looks remote, with things set to have cleared by the time cars hit the track on Thursday night. All three days of racing have a 30 per cent chance of precipitation, but Friday qualifying and Sunday race day move to ‘clear skies’ from Thursday’s ‘overcast with drizzle’.That means the enthralling title race should continue as planned, with Lando Norris closing in on a maiden title as wins in Mexico and Brazil have given him a healthy 24-point lead over McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri and 49 over reigning four-time champion Max Verstappen. With three races to go, Norris can’t become champion in Vegas even if he takes maximum points, but he could end Verstappen’s hopes by taking nine points more than his good friend. Why weather is important in VegasEven if the rain doesn’t impact the result, the conditions in Sin City very likely still will, as it will again be the coldest race of the season with average temperatures of 11 degrees. All sessions have been brought forward two hours, with the race and qualifying at 8pm local time, which is 5am UK time.Yet the coldness likely won’t favour Norris, Piastri and McLaren, who have tended to perform far better in hot conditions. The race could be decided by the weather conditions on the trackGettyNorris is closing in on the title, but he hasn’t been great in Vegas, nor cold weather conditionsGettyInstead, it could be Mercedes who set the pace, with their W16 challenger kicking into gear in cooler conditions.Lead driver George Russell won in Canada back in June and at a cold Brazil last time out teammate Kimi Antonelli put in his best performance of the season to come home second.Russell was dominant as Mercedes won in Vegas last year, while Norris has finished sixth and retired in the previous two events.Assessing his chances ahead of the weekend, the Silver Arrows driver said: “I expect us to be strong. “I’ll be very surprised if we’re as strong as we were last year, but we hope so.“I think Vegas will be a good opportunity for us. We’re still seeing this year we tend to go well on tracks where there’s no tyre overheating and I think that will be another circuit where we don’t see the tyre overheating.”
