The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the days and the nights are expected to gradually get warmer. The minimum temperature recorded in Pune on Wednesday was 9.5 degrees Celsius but, by Sunday, this is expected to be 12 degrees Celsius. In areas such as Magarpatta, Lohegaon, Koregaon Park, and Lavale, the minimum temperature is likely to be around 16-17 degrees Celsius by Sunday. The mercury is also climbing during the day. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature recorded was 30 degrees Celsius. This is likely to be stable or change marginally in the days to come.“The cold weather over the past few days was due to clear skies, a lack of moisture in the atmosphere, and the winds blowing from the north after the passage of western disturbances. These western disturbances, due to moisture supply from the Caspian Sea and Black Sea, among other things, travel through Afghanistan and Pakistan towards parts of the western Himalayan region, such as Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, bringing rain and snowfall in those regions. The cold winds from the western Himalayan region, via north and central India, were making our region of Maharashtra cold. Now that the northerly component of the winds has reduced partially, the night temperatures are likely to rise marginally,” said Anupam Kashyapi, a former head of the IMD’s weather forecasting division in Pune.Kashyapi added that the temperature would remain partially warm until there is a fresh western disturbance, causing cold winds from the western Himalayan region to blow to Maharashtra via north and central India. In Pune and its neighbourhoods, the sky is likely to be clear till Saturday, after which there is a slight chance of it turning partly cloudy towards the afternoon or evening. The IMD had issued a yellow alert for a cold wave only over isolated locations in Jalgaon, Nashik, and Ahilyanagar, among other places, till Wednesday. It has not yet issued a fresh alert.Dipanita Nath is interested in the climate crisis and sustainability. She has written extensively on social trends, heritage, theatre and startups.
