(File photo)The Telangana High Court Monday directed the state government to decide on the establishment of the district consumer disputes redressal commissions in 23 new districts of the state in the next four weeks, holding that “the matter requires urgent attention of the government.”The Division Bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G M Mohiuddin was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by law student Akula Sampath Kumar seeking directions to the Telangana Government and the Centre to establish consumer disputes redressal commissions in the state’s remaining 23 districts in compliance with Section 28 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.The PIL also sought the upcoming district commissions to be adequately staffed, funded, and equipped to handle consumer disputes efficiently.During the last hearing, the Government Pleader for Cooperative Societies, appearing for respondent No 3/Legal Affairs, Legislative Affairs, and Justice Law Department, sought time to get instructions, and file a counter-affidavit.As the bench noted that a counter affidavit in the matter has not been filed, the counsel for the state  Monday informed the court that “the issue is under active consideration of the government”.The bench further noted that after the formation of the state of Telangana in 2014, the existing 10 districts were reorganised by the creation of 23 more districts in which no District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commissions exist to date.“The matter requires urgent attention on the part of the government. It is therefore expected that a decision in that regard be taken at the level of the respondent government within a period of four weeks,” the bench said in its order.Story continues below this adThe matter was listed for hearing on December 22, 2025. The bench directed the state counsel to file an affidavit in compliance by that day.Telangana, which initially had 10 districts at the time of its formation in 2014, was reorganised into 31 districts with the creation of 21 new districts in October 2016.
