This is one thing that is not capturing too much headlines yet but worth keeping tabs of. China's foreign ministry is now out saying that Japan prime minister Takaichi's remarks on the Taiwan issue have seriously damaged the political foundations between the two countries. For some context, she commented here on a possible military response if China does attack Taiwan. If you must know, this is a sensitive regional topic that Japanese lawmakers have tend to avoid and close an eye towards as it does somehow trigger Beijing. And that's precisely what is happening now. Earlier today, China has also issued a travel advisory to its citizens so as to not to travel to Japan. That weighed slightly on Japanese tourism stocks before a late rebound that saw the Nikkei close just 0.1% lower. After the advisory, Tokyo has decided to send a senior foreign ministry official over to Beijing to try and calm tensions. However, I doubt Beijing would let this go so easily. So, we'll see how things play out from here.As a reminder, this isn't really the first time that China and Japan has not seen eye-to-eye on certain agendas. There has always been underlying tension between the two countries, not least as evident as the one just a little over a decade ago on coastal territories. That eventually led to Beijing curbing rare earth exports to Tokyo, which eventually led to the building of Lynas in Malaysia as mentioned here.
