Three accused, including two alleged shooters, arrested at Howrah railway station in Kolkata two days ago in connection with the murder of kabaddi promoter Kanwar Digvijay Singh, alias Rana Balachauria, were handed over to police on remand for three days by a Mohali court on Wednesday.With these arrests, the total number of accused apprehended in the case rose to eight, while one accused was killed in a police encounter, police said.Balachauria was shot dead during a kabaddi tournament at Sector 79 in Sohana on December 15 last.Addressing the media, Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans said, “The arrested accused were produced before the court on Wednesday, and were handed over to police on remand for three days for further investigation.”The SSP said, “The arrested persons were acting on the directions of foreign-based gangsters Balwinder Singh, alias Donny Bal, and Amarjit Singh, alias Khabba.”“On the directions of the Director General of Police, Punjab, special teams of the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) and Mohali district police were constituted, which, with the help of CCTV footage analysis and technical surveillance, successfully tracked and arrested the accused in Kolkata,” the SSP said.Also Read | From Mohali to Howrah: How Punjab Police nabbed shooters of Kabaddi promoter Rana Balachauria from BengalThe SSP identified the accused as 23-year-old Karan Pathak, alias Karan Defaulter, 25-year-old Tarandeep Singh, and 22-year-old Sukhsherpal Singh, alias Akash Uppal.Story continues below this ad“Investigation has revealed that Karan Pathak, along with Aditya, alias Makhan, fired at Balachauria,” SSP Hans said.A resident of Amritsar, Karan, a Class VIII pass, has two cases of quarrel and fighting registered against him at Division-B police station in Amritsar, police said.“Tarandeep was present near the crime scene with a motorcycle and facilitated the escape of the shooters after the murder,” the SSP saidA resident of Barewal village in Ludhiana district, Tarandeep, an MA in sociology, has a case under the Arms Act registered against him at the Aero City police station in Mohali, police said.Story continues below this ad“Investigation revealed that Sukhsherpal is the maternal uncle of gangster Amarjit Singh, alias Khabba, and played a key role in planning the attack on Balachauria,” the SSP said.A resident of Uppal village in Tarn Taran district, Sukhsherpal, a Class XII pass, is wanted in extortion cases registered in Gurdaspur district.The SSP said that during their interrogation, it emerged that the arrested accused were shooters working for the foreign-based gangsters and were involved in murder and extortion activities on their instructions.“The conspiracy to murder Balachauria was hatched in October 2025. From October till the date of the incident, the accused, along with their accomplice Aditya Kapoor, alias Makhan, stayed in various hotels across Chandigarh, Kalka, Zirakpur and Kharar,” he said.Story continues below this adAbout the accused arrested earlier, the SSP said they include Ashdeep Singh of Tarn Taran district; Jugraj Singh, alias Jagga, of Chhapianwali; Mandeep Singh, alias Mota, of Amritsar; Davinder Singh, alias Tinka, of Panchkula district in Haryana; and Gagandeep Singh, alias Karan Sohal, of Wadala Colony in Jalandhar.Harpinder Singh, alias Middi, of Tarn Taran, was killed in a police encounter in the Lalru area, the SSP said, ADDING: “Davinder is a cab driver by profession. He provided logistical support, handled funds sent from abroad and facilitated the movement of the accused after the incident.”“Aditya Kapoor, alias Makhan, and some other associates are still absconding. Police teams are conducting raids to arrest them,” the SSP added.The SSP said Balachauria had been targeted twice earlier at different locations, but the accused failed to execute their plan on those occasions.
