With the Union government considering extending micro credit to gig workers, the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) on Sunday welcomed the move and described it as much needed support to those in an already economically vulnerable position. TGPWU president Shaik Salauddin said, “The move recognises the economic vulnerabilities of gig, platform and domestic workers. It also encourages their entrepreneurial journeys. Access to small, collateral-free credit can play a transformative role in promoting self-employment, livelihood security and financial inclusion for workers who are often excluded from formal banking systems.”The union hoped that the scheme, once finalised, would be implemented in a transparent manner and prove worker-friendly with minimal documentation requirement.Published - January 19, 2026 02:05 pm IST
