During the official inauguration of the third and final phase of the Marsa Sports Complex, Prime Minister Robert Abela highlighted that this facility reflects the government’s ongoing investment in sports, athletes, and their future development.The Marsa Sports Complex was made up of three distinct phases:A sports complex for gymnastics and other sports.The regeneration project of the historic 1903 building.The latest phase, which includes a dedicated centre for Weightlifting, Squash, Netball, and a high-level fitness facility.The total investment across these three phases exceeds €16 million.The complex spans three floors and offers state-of-the-art sports and ancillary facilities, meeting modern international standards. In this final phase, new Squash and Netball courts were completed, alongside a dedicated Weightlifting centre and a high-level fitness centre, developed through a public-private partnership.Prime Minister Abela noted that these upgraded facilities now provide sports communities with a modern, professional, and accessible environment that strengthens training, competition, and athlete development at every stage of their careers.He also emphasised that such investment positions Malta on the international sports map. Next year, Malta will host the Youth Commonwealth Games, featuring participants from 74 countries.The Prime Minister highlighted that these Games, the largest sporting event ever hosted in Malta, are possible thanks to ongoing investments in sports infrastructure, which continue to raise national standards and enhance Malta’s global sporting profile. The newly inaugurated facilities will also be used during the Games.Dr. Abela stressed that investment in sports is part of a broader government vision, which sees sport as a pillar of society, promoting better health, discipline, teamwork, and strong community values. These initiatives contribute to the launch of Vision Malta 2050, aiming to take the country to the next level. In Marsa, he also outlined government plans to regenerate Marsa and the Port Area, with further high-quality investments moving forward.In his remarks, Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research, and Innovation Clifton Grima spoke about years of work in Malta’s sports sector. He highlighted that recent and ongoing investments are significantly improving the sector. These efforts include infrastructure development, support for associations, clubs, and sports organisations, as well as direct financial assistance for athletes.“The new infrastructure and upgraded facilities provide better opportunities for athletes preparing for competitive events and their overall sports development. This work is helping Malta become a centre for international sporting events, while also offering top-class facilities for athletes, sportspeople, and the general public,” said Grima.SportMalta CEO Mark Cutajar emphasised that SportMalta has transformed the Marsa sports facilities, which were previously in poor condition, into high-quality complexes serving associations, clubs, international events, and the broader community for physical activity and sports participation.The ceremony also included a discussion with three athletes from different disciplines, who shared their experiences on the importance of modern facilities, competition preparation, and the role of sports in youth development.
