Flagging the shortage of fertilizers in the State, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, on Tuesday, requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the supply of fertilizers immediately, besides allotting additional quantity, so as to avoid shortage during the kharif and forthcoming rabi seasons. Tamil Nadu was one of the important paddy-producing States in the country and the Tamil Nadu government accorded the highest priority for increasing agricultural production in the State and increasing the income of the farmers.Mr. Stalin said Tamil Nadu was implementing targeted, region-specific programmes to encourage farmers to attain maximum productivity, apart from closely monitoring the timely availability of the inputs, he said. Due to the early onset of the monsoon, the paddy cultivation during this kharif season was in full swing in Tamil Nadu from June this year.As of now, an area of 5.66 lakh h.a. has been covered under paddy, which was 0.525 lakh h.a. (10%) over and above the previous year’s coverage of 5.136 lakh ha for the corresponding period, he pointed out. Consequently, a sharp rise in the demand for straight fertilizers was being witnessed across the State, the Chief Minister said.“In spite of higher crop coverage due to bountiful monsoon and adequate storage of water in the major reservoirs, fertilizer manufacturers have not supplied required quantity of below Urea, DAP, MOP and complex fertilizers from April 2025 to August 2025, as per the supply plan of the Government of India and their supply is only around 57% of allocation,” Mr. Stalin underlined.Mr. Stalin further requested the PM for instructing the Union Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers to ensure that the fertilizer manufacturers supply the shortfall quantity of 27,823 MT of urea, 15,831 MT of DAP, 12,422 MT of MOP and 98,623 MT of NPK Complex immediately to Tamil Nadu. “As the production prospects are bright in order to meet the demand for kharif 2025 and upcoming rabi 2025, I also request the Union government to additionally allot 40,000 MT of urea, 20,000 MT of DAP, 20,000 MT of MOP and 40,000 MT of NPK Complex for September this year to Tamil Nadu.Published - September 17, 2025 05:45 am IST
