Cheltenham Town have sacked Michael Flynn. The Robins’ decision was made just hours after they slumped to a 3-0 loss to Oldham Athletic. Flynn’s axing was communicated to fans via a 48-word club statement.“Cheltenham Town can confirm that we have parted company with manager Michael Flynn following today’s defeat to Oldham Athletic,” the statement read.“Everyone at the Club would like to thank Michael for his efforts and contributions during his time with us and we wish him all the best in the future.”How Flynn predicted his sacking hours before confirmationFlynn’s departure will not have come as a major surprise to himself given he admitted to BBC Radio Gloucestershire results like the one against Oldham often result in an unfortunate outcome.“Performances like that get you the sack, I can’t be any more honest than that,” Flynn said.“I can take responsibility for certain things, but I’m not just going to blame myself for that performance today from that group of players.”When pressed on whether he felt the axe was imminent, Flynn said: “I hope not, because I really love this club and enjoy working here.“But it is a results business and I’m not stupid.“I’m someone that is going to come out here and speak open and honest, whether that is good for bad. And things have to improve.“And if I still am [in charge] they have to improve quick.”Flynn departs Cheltenham with a record of 24 wins, 13 draws and 30 defeatsGettyBut Flynn will not get the chance to turn things around at Whaddon Road. How have Cheltenham played this season?Defeat against Oldham was Cheltenham’s seventh of the League Two campaign as they remained rooted to last place having picked up just four points from a possible 27.It also marked Cheltenham’s ninth defeat in 12 matches across all competitions having lost to Cardiff City in the EFL Cup and Plymouth Argyle in the EFL Trophy.Flynn’s exit now means the Robins are seeking their fourth manager since 2022.Wade Elliott took the reins in July 2022 but was axed in September 2023 after he oversaw a run one point from just eight league fixtures. The former Burnley and Bournemouth midfielder was replaced by Darrell Clarke. The Welshman is now on the hunt for his fifth managerial role following stints with Swindon, Walsall and Newport CountyGettyHowever, Clarke was only at the helm for 39 games before he was appointed as Barnsley manager, heralding the arrival of Flynn. The first task of Flynn’s successor will be to steer the club away from danger as they seek to avoid a second relegation in three seasons.Cheltenham are next in action on Saturday as they face a trip to Grimsby Town, who famously knocked out Manchester United of the EFL Cup via a thrilling penalty shootout.
