Officials said it has resorted to the scientific root ball technique for replantation. In a bid to augment water supply for the city’s rising demands, the BMC is constructing a 2000 MLD water treatment plant at the Bhandup water treatment complex. At present, the complex has two units — with a capacity of 1,910 MLD and 900 MLD each — which supply over 2,810 MLD water in several pockets of the city. However, the construction of the new 2,000 MLD plant impacted at least 1,235 trees collectively. Eyeing to offset the loss of green cover, the BMC launched a replantation drive within Bhandup wherein at least 438 trees have been successfully replanted. Civic officials said the replantation has secured a success rate of 100 per cent, and was carried out using the scientific ‘root ball’ technique. The BMC said new leaves, twigs and buds have started to reappear at the site. This technique entails transplantation of trees by careful digging along a portion of the soil near the roots. It reduces damage and transplant shock as the technique ensures preservation of a tree’s root system. Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), said the upkeep of the trees will be ensured through regular watering, pruning, use of fertilisers and other protective measures.Meanwhile, to compensate for the remaining 835 trees impacted in Bhandup, the civic body is undertaking a plantation of 11,443 new trees in the periphery of the Tansa lake area.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt Ltd
