ESPN is maximizing its superstar on all of its platforms.Stephen A. Smith made his Monday Night Football debut ahead of the Detroit Lions–Baltimore Ravens showdown. It was met with mixed reviews, as some fans seem to have Smith-fatigue. ESPN’s biggest star has been expanding his reach and appearances across all platforms in recent years and has even teased a presidential bid.“Who asked for this,” one fan questioned on X.“Changed channel immediately,” another chimed in.“ESPN’s quest to become unwatchable is getting serious,” one more added. As part of his new five-year deal with the Worldwide Leader, reportedly worth $100 million, Smith will make three appearances on MNF this NFL season. The good news for those who aren’t fans of the sports broadcaster: he now has just two appearances left.Smith will be back in Week 9 when the Arizona Cardinals travel to play the Dallas Cowboys, and in Week 14 when the Philadelphia Eagles head west to take on the Los Angeles Chargers. However, Smith said not to be surprised if he ends up making more than three appearances.“I’m going to be doing at least three Monday Night Football games this year,” Smith said in an interview with Front Office Sports.“Those are just the three I know about. Knowing them at ESPN, they’ll want more. They’ll certainly want more of me on NBA Countdown. And so who knows?Smith had an on-field conversation with Lions star Jahmyr GibbsX/@AWFULANNOUNCINGSmith joined Scott Van Pelt (left) and Jason Kelce (center) on the pregame desk[/caption]“I mean, I’m doing First Take. But it’s ESPN. They know whatever they need me for—SportsCenter, NBA Countdown, NFL Countdown—it doesn’t matter.“Whatever’s going to help make the network successful. Jimmy Pitaro, Burke Magnus, Dave Roberts, Mike McQuade. They know me. They know I’ll do whatever they ask.”Smith’s role in the MNF coverage included an on-field conversation with Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs and Ryan Clark, as well as joining host Scott Van Pelt, Jason Kelce, and Marcus Spears at the desk.He provided insightful commentary and strong opinions, as you would expect from Smith. The broadcast wasn’t forcing the media megastar down anyone’s throat by any means, but people will always find a way to complain.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our NFL Facebook page, subscribe to our talkSPORT End Zone YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more
