Woman’s decomposed body found in Delhi flat after neighbours alert cops, husband critical

When the attempts went in vain, she alerted her maternal uncle, who lives nearby (Representative image)The decomposed body of a 65-year-old woman at a flat in Southeast Delhi’s Jamia Nagar, her 70-year-old husband in a critical condition, and their mentally challenged son living with them — this is what the police found on Sunday night after the family’s neighbours alerted the authorities, said officers.According to the police, a PCR call was received at the Jamia Nagar police station around 11:10 pm on Sunday. The caller said that his sister and brother-in-law were not responding to calls or opening the door of their flat. A team of officers rushed to the spot, where the caller was waiting. The apartment door was locked from the inside and was broken with the help of neighbours, officers said.Inside, police found the body of Aftab Jehan lying on a bed in one of the rooms. Beside her was her husband, Siraz Khan, a retired music teacher from Jamia Millia Islamia, lying in a fragile state.He was immediately shifted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre and is said to be critical but stable. Their son, Imran, around 48–50 years old, was found sitting outside the bedroom, said police.“Upon questioning, it was found that the couple’s son, Imran, is mentally challenged and had taken medical treatment. When his parents fell ill, he could not call for help. An initial investigation revealed that the body was highly decomposed. No injury is revealed and it appears to be a natural death due to illness however the exact cause of death can only be revealed after the post mortem examination,” said DCP South East Hemant Tiwari.“When he was questioned, Imran couldn’t speak coherently and said that his mother and father were sleeping. He had confined himself to the house for the last 3-4 days without food,” the DCP added.The couple’s daughter, who lives in Hong Kong, had been trying to contact the family for several days.
