(Express photo)Kunal, a Chandigarh resident and an inspector with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), has been honoured with the 4th Sports Achiever Award by LNCT University, Bhopal, for his outstanding achievements in handball.The ceremony was organised on the occasion of the 118th birth anniversary of Captain Roop Singh, younger brother of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. The award was presented to Kunal by Dhyan Chand’s son Ashok Dhyan Chand, who was the chief guest at the event held on September 9.Kunal is posted with the 8th reserve battalion of the CISF in Jaipur, Rajasthan. His sports career includes several significant accomplishments. From 2011 to 2016, he served as a key player and coach of the CISF Central Handball Team, and from 2017 to August 2025, he worked as the head coach.Kunal’s major achievements include receiving the Shaheed Rajiv Pandey State Sports Award from the Government of Chhattisgarh (2005–06) and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Chandigarh Administration (1995–96), along with many other national and state-level honours. He won a gold medal for India at the 6th Commonwealth Youth Handball Championship, represented India at the 15th Asian Games in Doha (2006), and also participated in the 6th SAR International Tournament in Hong Kong (2006).Kunal stated that as a coach, he also guided the Indian team at the 16th Junior Asian Men’s Handball Championship in Salalah (Oman) in 2018. Under his coaching, the team achieved several medals in the All India Police Games, Senior National Championships, Federation Cup, and National Games, which remain key highlights of his career.Pankaj Jain, Director of Sports at LNCT University, said, “This award is given to those individuals who, even after achieving success as players, continue to promote sports and constantly inspire players to stay motivated.
