Joe Flacco is getting benched, Tom Brady’s regret and other crazy NFL Week 2 overreactions

Wait 5 sec.

Dillon Gabriel, get your helmet. After Joe Flacco fell to 0-2 as the Cleveland Browns‘ starting quarterback, the easiest assumption to make in the NFL was that the 40-year-old Flacco would soon be benched. Mike McDaniel‘s job is apparently already on the line with the Miami Dolphins, while back-to-back victories have the Green Bay Packers looking like one of the top Super Bowl contenders in the league. It’s easy to overreact after just a couple games — it’s also an annual ritual that fans love to participate in.Here is talkSPORT’s roundup of the biggest and juiciest topics after Week 2.Some are total overreactions, but others are 100 percent on target.Check back weekly for the latest round of wild and crazy reactions. Joe Flacco is getting benchedFlacco was always on borrowed time in Cleveland, and the Browns’ 0-2 start is their own fault. With two promising rookie quarterbacks on the roster and Deshaun Watson‘s $230 million contract still hanging around, Flacco will soon be a veteran backup mentoring a rookie.Dillon Gabriel started his pro career by going 3-for-3 with a touchdown, while Shedeur Sanders is the biggest rookie name in the league. It’s easy to picture Cleveland starting 0-4 with tough games up next against Green Bay and at Detroit.talksportAshton Jeanty, Joe Flacco and Tom Brady were in the news in Week 2[/caption]GettyShedeur Sanders is getting closer to taking the field[/caption]A Week 5 international game in London against the Minnesota Vikings at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could be the perfect time for a rookie breakthrough for the Browns.Flacco might last a couple more games. But he’s not making it through all 17 as Cleveland’s locked-in starter.Overreaction: No.Ashton Jeanty is a bust as a first-round pickThere’s no doubt that Jeanty’s 2.7 yards-per-carry average must improve. He’s rushed 30 times for 81 yards and one touchdown, while his six catches have only totaled three yards.GettyJeanty needs time to find his way in the pros and must improve his stats[/caption]Those numbers normally get you cut in the NFL.But Jeanty was the No. 6 overall pick of the 2025 draft and he’s only 21-years-old.The former Boise State star ran for 4,769 yards and 50 TD in college, and finished second in the 2024 Heisman Trophy voting to Travis Hunter. It’s not uncommon for rookie offensive talent, especially wide receivers and running backs, to initially struggle in the NFL.Jeanty is just getting started, and improved QB play from Geno Smith — who threw three interceptions in a 20-9 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football — will help the rookie runner find his way on the pro field.Overreaction: Yes.Tom Brady will regret wearing a headsetThe booth shot seen around the world blew up on Monday, with the NFL forced to issue a statement about Tom Brady‘s headset-wearing appearance with the Las Vegas Raiders’ coaching staff.“There are no policies that prohibit an owner from sitting in the coaches’ booth or wearing a headset during a game,” the NFL said in a statement. “Brady was sitting in the booth in his capacity as a limited partner. All personnel sitting in the booth must abide by policies that prohibit the use of electronic devices other than league-issued equipment such as a Microsoft Surface Tablet for the Sideline Viewing System.”That won’t make the Brady problem go away.AFPBrady has been more controversial after his retirement as an NFL player[/caption]Fans have been suspicious of Brady’s dual role as Raiders minority owner and FOX Sports TV analyst from day one, and he made it look like the NFL is allowing Las Vegas to break the rules on national TV. The second the Raiders move above .500 again, it will become a glaring problem.Imagine Brady calling a Chiefs game on TV — he did that in Week 2 for a Super Bowl rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles. And then picture Brady in the Raiders’ coaching booth for a game against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, with the AFC West title on the line. The NFL will be the laughingstock of the pro sports world. At some point, the other 31 teams will step up and end the farce.Overreaction: No.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more.
