(Representational Image)Rain might dampen Navarati celebrations as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Monday forecast heavy to very heavy showers in parts of central Maharashtra and the Marathwada region for the next five days.The rain returned to Pune just as the city was ready for Navratri and Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the Bengali community.According to experts, the rain is the result of a low-pressure area and cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, and is expected to continue for the next five days.On Monday, the Shivajinagar area of Pune reported 5 mm of rainfall until 8.30 pm, and Baramati reported 43 mm – the highest recorded in the district. As parts of the district reported rain most of the night, IMD warned of thunder and lightning in parts of Pune Tuesday.Amidst the rain, 24 dams, including the Khadakwasla Dam, in the Pune district have started releasing water. Ujjani, the dam near the Pune-Solapur border, has started releasing 51,600 cusec of water as of 3 am Tuesday.While the retreat of the Southwest Monsoon began two weeks ago, the IMD has stated that conditions are ripe for its further retreat in the next few days. The Southwest Monsoon arrived earlier than usual this year, and the retreat also started two days earlier than normal.However, the spatial distribution of rainfall has not been very even, with July and August reporting deficits for the Pune district. As of Monday, the district received 1,000 mm of rainfall, against the 839 mm it is supposed to receive.
