Charlie Kirk – A Friend to ManyPhoto Recreated with AIA young person told me they hated Charlie Kirk and everything he stood for. They could not stand him and all of their friends felt the same way. The hate was so intense that this person finally decided it was time to look Charlie up for themselves and see what type of hateful things he was saying. They were was surprised to find out that Charlie was neither hateful, a racist, nor an evil person. There was no hate speech, or any racist speech. Their mind was slowing changed and they became avid viewer of his content. After his assassination, this person was devastated and is still mourning the loss of Charlie today. They feel as if a close friend has been murdered. Many of us also felt as if Charlie was one of our ‘close friends’, even though we may not have ever met him.Kirk was described as a “genius-level intelligence” with “acute political instincts” and a “flair for patriotism, populism, and Christian nationalism.”[1] They saw for themselves he was very good at defending the Bible and what it stood for.Friendship From the BibleThe assassination of Charlie Kirk has left many people in pain. Although I never met of spoke to or him, I also feel as if I lost a close friend. With this as a background, I wanted to share some thoughts on Friendship From the Bible (Click to see video or read below)Do You Fit In?We all have felt, at differing times in our life, like we don’t quite fit in. We seek out the groups or individual we identify with from a very young age. As young as elementary we begin to associate with others we are comfortable with, that we want to connect with. We also identify people or groups we don’t want to be part of, or would not accept us. Young students may related to various groups like the jocks, the cheerleaders, the nerds, the druggies, the church goers, the theater group, the musicians, the brainiacs, etc.Where did you fit in in Junior High? I was a jock and my life changed overnight to being someone who was bullied, to someone who was left alone. This happened when I wrestled and beat the Junior High School bully, securing my spot on the team. People were like, “Whoa, did you hear he beat ‘so and so?.” I was no longer bullied. But this is also the time when young people want to separate themselves from their parents. I remember my older brother came home with the Woodstock album. Wow, this was insurrection in our house. I could not believe it, yet my parents let it happen. Later, I remember getting this very large poster (like 5 feet square) and putting it up in my room. These were signs of rebellion on our parts to separate ourselves from our parents and their generation. We wanted to be different. Many young people want to rebel against our fathers and mothers, but what does God say about how we should treat our parents?Deuteronomy 5:16 (NIV) “Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you. This is the ONLY commandment that comes with promises associated with it; and it’s two promises.Honor your parents and you will live long,Honor your parents and it will go well in the land you are living in. This “Land” is your country. By definition, the more children that honor their parents, the less rebellion there will be in the land. That’s less confusion, violence, crime, abandonment, murder, etc.Treat your parents with respect for your own and your country’s good. The more good people there are in society, the less policing of them is needed. The less monitoring is needed, the less surveillance is needed. The more the number of people that are moral (controlled internally), the less the masses have to be controlled and policed (controlled externally). What is a Friend?Read the record of Jonathan and his Armorbearer attacking and defeating (with the help of God) a whole garrison of Philistines in 1 Samuel 13:23 – 14:15. Jonathan did not tell his father he was going to do this, probably because he did not think King Saul was aligned with God. Jonathan was a mighty man.He was also a very close friend of David before he became King. Later, in 1 Samuel 20, we see Jonathan again acts without his father’s knowledge when he protects David from his father’s plan to kill him. This is an excellent example of friendship, one who is closer than a brother.Proverbs 18:24 “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”Do you have have any friends who are “unreliable?” Someone who can’t be trusted when needed, someone who never takes your side in discussions or arguments with others? (Next week I will expand on this topic with the article I will call “Split the Baby!)”1 Samuel 20:40-42 …David got up from his hiding place beside the boulder, then fell on his face to the ground—three times prostrating himself! And then they kissed one another and wept, friend over friend, David weeping especially hard. 42 Jonathan said, “Go in peace! The two of us have vowed friendship in God’s name, saying, ‘God will be the bond between me and you, and between my children and your children forever!’”By the way, there is no hint of gay love here or in any other records. David and Jonathan were comrades in arms. See footnote below for other examples of kissing[2]. Later when Jonathan was killed alongside his father, this is what David said:2 Samuel 1:25-26 The mighty warriors—fallen, fallen in the middle of the fight! Jonathan—struck down on your hills! 26 O my dear brother Jonathan, I’m crushed by your death. Your friendship was a miracle-wonder, love far exceeding anything I’ve known—or ever hope to know.Jonathan’s death always bothered me. He was loyal to his father even though, he knew Saul was not following God. He stayed with his father to his end. A sad ending. Perhaps he should have sought the counseling of a Prophet for advice of when to break with his father. On the other hand, the reason David is called a “Man after God’s own heart” is because he let God work out the details of his kingship. He could have killed Saul and taken the throne, but he would not touch the anointed of God, even thou Saul was wrong. In fact, when Saul failed to kill himself after losing a battle he asked someone to kill him. When this person did and told David thinking he would get a reward, David had him executed for killing God’s anointed. There are a number of times in the Bible when men were told they would be king and they took it into their own hands and murdered the existing king. This is not God’s way. David had to wait twelve years after he was anointed as King to take his throne.Who are YOUR FriendsThere’s an old Italian story that goes like this. Two friends came upon a third person and an argument began between one of the friends and this third person. It broke out into a fight. After the fight was over, the friend that was fighting said “Why didn’t you help me.” His friend responded “Because you were wrong!” He responded “Don’t you think I know that I was wrong, that is why I needed a friend’s help.”I’m not advocating for supporting wrong behavior, but the story points out the need for loyalty between friends. Has one of your friends stood idly by when you need help when you were in the right? When Americans were forced to take a vaccine that has now been proven to be unhealthy, did you defend those who would not take it?In Germany before and during World War II, many people needed friends, but there were none to be found. This is a famous quote by Martin Niemöller:First they came for the CommunistsAnd I did not speak out, Because I was not a CommunistThen they came for the SocialistsAnd I did not speak out, Because I was not a SocialistThen they came for the trade unionistsAnd I did not speak out, Because I was not a trade unionistThen they came for the JewsAnd I did not speak out, Because I was not a JewThen they came for meAnd there was no one left, To speak out for meA Friend in Need, is a Friend IndeedA true friend is one who helps you when you are in need and does not sit idly by as you struggle. They struggle and battle with you. If you are a Christian, your friends, brothers, sisters and mother are those who do the will of the Father.Matthew 12:46-50 (NIV) While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” 48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”It is very important to live with and keep your eye on those who live according to the word of God. Be a friend with these good people. Remember when we were talking about connecting to and making friends in Junior High. Here is an interesting quote.“Show Me Your Friends and I will Show You Your Future.” If we have bad friends we will have a bad future. But as Christians we have a eternal future, not only can we be a friend with fellow Christians, but our Citizenship and future is in Heaven!2 Corinthians 6:14-16, 18-20 (NIV) 14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God.18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. We as Christians are and will increasingly be hatted by those who hate Christ. The world hates Christ. There is enough hate in the world already, let’s not hate each other, let’s not have division, let’s love one another. Let’s be loyal friends to one another. Let us be trustworthy to a friend when they are in need. This is what God wants. MAKE A NEW FRIEND TODAY.Next week post “Split the Baby!”FOOTNOTES: [1] Grok -Kirk co-founded TPUSA in 2012 with no initial funding or connections, aiming to promote free markets and limited government on campuses.
