The rain started mostly in the afternoon and continued till late evening.On Thursday, Pune and its surrounding region received medium to heavy rainfall with Pashan’s automatic weather service (AWS) recording 71 mm. Lohegaon’s observation station received 74.5 mm, which was the highest recorded in the district.Thursday’s rain was accompanied by thunderstorms which saw many citizens being caught in the showers. Chinchwad’s station reported 37 mm. Magarpatta received 19.5 mm while Shivajinagar received 57.2 mm. Other parts of the district receive medium to heavy rainfall. While continuous rain was reported on Thursday, the district as of such has not recorded a large excess of rainfall. The cumulative rainfall for June to September (till date) has been 968.6 mm, as against the normal of 860 mm. Thursday’s rainfall was no where close to the 133 mm that Pune city’s Shivajinagar’s AWS had received in a single day last year.The southwest monsoon has started to withdraw three days before its normal date. At present the line of withdrawal passes through Punjab and Gujarat as an upper air cyclonic disturbance lies over Marathawada. IMD has warned of thunderstorms over Pune and other regions of the state for the next two days.The heavy rains had caught many in the city unaware, especially in the evenings. Pune areas like Shivajinagar, Yerwada and others reported water logging. Some stray incidents of tree branches falling were witnessed on roads. The monsoon has been inconsistent with the norm of July and August, with rains being just above normal. September is expected to see more than normal rainfall.
