Blackburn’s clash against Ipswich Town at Ewood Park has been abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.Referee Stephen Martin brought a halt to proceedings in the 80th minute and instructed for the players to depart the field as the rain lashed down in Lancashire. But the Ewood Park pitch ultimately could not drain fast enough amid the wet weather, forcing Martin to take the drastic decision to end the contest early. The Met Office had issued a weather warning prior to the contest for the north-west, with rain expected to continue until tomorrow. At the time it was abandoned, Blackburn led 1-0 courtesy of a Todd Cantwell penalty.Blackburn wrote on X that the EFL Board will make a decision on whether the contest will be replayed in full ‘in due course.’A series of posts read: “The ref has called the game to a stop and brought all the players off the pitch due to the wet pitch.”They followed that up by saying: “Due to a waterlogged pitch, the referee has called off the contest.”Before adding: “A decision on whether the fixture will be replayed in full will be made by the EFL Board in due course.”Despite Blackburn holding a slender lead with only 10 minutes remaining, they may be forced to replay the contest from the beginning.More to follow…
