Written by Drishti JainNew Delhi | September 21, 2025 03:19 AM IST 3 min readDelhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday inaugurated a biogas plant in West Delhi’s Najafgarh that will help in cleaning the Yamuna by processing cattle dung and municipal waste, said officials.Built at a cost of Rs 16 crore, the 200-tonne-per-day (TPD) capacity plant, spread over 2.72 acres, in Nangli Dairy will treat cattle dung and biodegradable waste into compressed biogas (CBG) and manure, officials said.“The plant will produce compressed natural gas and fertilizer using cow dung and waste from nearby dairy farms, which flows into the Yamuna through existing drains, thus curbing pollution. It will also boost the earnings of the people of the surrounding villages as they would be able to use the cow dung. With this biogas plant, not just your area will become cleaner but it will prove to be a critical milestone for the cleaning of the Yamuna,” said the CM at the inauguration event.According to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the agency concerned will collect waste from dairy owners at a rate of 65 paise per kg while the biogas slurry will be used as a natural fertilizer to boost soil fertility. The work on setting up the plant had begun in December 2018. The plant is partially funded by the Urban Development Fund of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.Attacking the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, Gupta alleged that the project was delayed for years despite funds being sanctioned in 2018.“It took eight years to complete this project because the previous government kept blaming PM Narendra Modi ji instead of working. They indulged in politics over everything. Only when the Centre and the triple-engine (BJP) government pushed together, this project finally moved forward,” she said. The CM added, “We are setting up plants that work on green energy. Our government has set up 11 cowsheds and aims to overhaul the drainage system of Delhi. Soon, the city will see a new dawn where there will be no garbage mounds. But to reach that milestone, we will have to set up waste-to-energy plants. Within a short span of time, we have been able to deliver a lot of projects for the Capital.”Story continues below this adAccording to MCD, Nangli Dairy has approximately 13,000 cattle and the Kakrola Dairy has 7,000 cattle — each producing approximately 10 kg of dung per day. Thus, the dung waste production at both dairies is approximately 200 metric tonnes per day.Meanwhile, the CNG produced from the newly-inaugurated biogas plant will be supplied to IGL through pipelines. The plant will produce approximately 14,000 cubic meters of raw biogas (CNG) per day and 5.6 tonnes of compressed biogas (purified) per day, as per civic officials.MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar stated that the civic body will dedicate one biogas plant in Ghogha dairy in Northwest Delhi in coming days and two more plants till next year.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt Ltd
